Many years since I did PA work, but back then one of the biggest problems was poor amplifiers not being able to control the speakers. I hope this is not the case here, otherwise you will suffer the same fate with a new set of speakers.
I liked the EV sound stage speakers, but they were a tad expensive (but VERY good). In fact little JBL control 1's were excellent for pub gigs, regularly got those smoking with a quality 100watt/channel amp, and no lasting effects.
I would suggest mainstream old skool stuff. EV (if budget allows) peavey, yamaha, JBL etc.
But do make sure the amp is up to the job.....

We use peavey subs and tops with black widow speaker chassis. Got them second hand from ebay.

Excellent sound, can handle mega power (including miked drum kit) well built boxes (can take knocks) and fairly cheap second hand. Can find the details if ya like?

Dan

EDIT: +1 with the quality amp situation...

Not all speakers need cross overs, depends on the tweeters (i.e. piezo based ones don't require them from what I recall they have a high impedance at low frequencies....)..

peavey ul115 subs here along with peavey impulse 1210 mid tops.
All fed from a behringer active xover and a brace of crown xls602s.
2.4kw of clean power.
The amps barely wake up, far less struggle.
I go to great lengths to keep the gain structure clean all the way through the signal path, it helps speakers to live longer.

Our mics are EV ndym 767 which are very clean, as is the mixer, a mackie cfx12.
All i'm saying is that a little attention to everything, starting at the mics, will help your speakers live longer.

The were hooked up to a valve amp at some time in the past.

We used to have a Nexo Alpha rig when I worked as a lampy. Our 'noise boy' colleagues used to rave about how great it was, and how good the Crown amps were.

That was 10 years ago though, so things have probably moved on somewhat!

We use 2 stacks of LEM Hercules. It's a tri-amped system and is stunningly clear, even at high volumes. The speakers are quite efficient so even though they're 'only' 1KW/pair, you never need to push them hard.

Brilliant

Looking at this.

Can some one tell me if this is a 2 Ohm / 4 Ohm or 8 Ohm Load for the AMP? the vendor couldn;t explaine it to me.

both units are nominally 4 ohm impedance but they do not cover the same frequencey range.

I would wire sub and spkr in parallel (the subs should have HF fillter) resulting in niminal impedance of 2 ohm.

If you are running mono PA, then connect both pairs in series so you are back to 4 ohm.

The Preavey Pro range are quite harsh sounding in the top end especially.
Go and have a listen to some of the dearer stuff and you'll hear what I'm talking about.

I tried it before, and really didn't like it at all. The HF components are a bit angle grinder for my liking.

We chose more expensive second hand stuff instead of this range bought new.

Your call.

Cheers
