Fixing LCD Tellys

Our old 26" Acer LCD TV gave up last week. We wanted a bigger one so have replaced it, and I was thinking of getting a quote to get it fixed.

Is it likely to be worth it?

Sadly I'd say not. They seem to go for pennies on Ebay and the price of them has fallen so much recently.

Parts aren't easy to get hold of and in my opinion modern electronics just aren't made to last or be fixed!

Horrible to think it'll probably end up in landfill but......

Not often financially viable unless you use your household insurance like a current account

Im using a 21inch Lcd monitor that I recently repaired. It was my sons and one day it refused to come on and the wife went out and bought him a replacement before I had a chance to look at it.
After I got it apart I found 2 capacitors in the power supply to be faulty, after replacing them at a cost of 55p it now works perfectly.
So depending on what the fault is it may be worth a look if you are electrically minded or know someone who is, I suspect that if you take it in somewhere that it will not be cost effective.
It may be worth googling the model and fault to see if it is a common fault with known cause.

Thanks

I can solder a few new bits into it if I can find out what's wrong.

It's not the power supply though, as it powers up. Just won't switch on.

This monitor powered up but then shut down almost straight away into standby condition. If you can get the back off look at the large electrolytic capacitors, if any are bulging on the ends or leaking then they are suspect. It seems as if lots of electrical gear made recently had suspect electrolytic capacitors due to a manufacturing process fault in china.
There is even a website dedicated to electronic equipment with the problem something like badcaps.com
