Got to choose a £1000 gift today ... ideas?
It should be a significant object of quality, a lasting memento.
I can purchase it later, but have to choose it by Monday 10 Jan.
Limitations -
Not an electrical item
Not money
Not a charitable donation
I'm finding it difficult, any suggestions?
Edited to add - It's for me, so what would you get for yourself?

i was going to say a breitling/tag heuer watch sine i lust after them everytime i look in a jewellery shop window.....but what about some sort of
quality furniture? table?
a snap on/teng/mac roll cab/and top box?
something that i'd use regularly but last would be better than an ornament to me.

On a more serious note - no idea. What's is actually for (may give suggestions more of a steer)
Nice watch? That's what I went for when my missus put similar constraints for a pressie the year before last
ETA - Too slow typing! Mine's a TAG. It's with me everyday so even more than my tools!

that's a good call. you should be able to get a corking set from R-Tech, but can you split the fund and get the gas from elsewhere?

You are pretty much restricted to bling items then.
As stated previously, a nice watch such as a Brightbling or a good s/hand Rado. Sorry, I mean previously owned.
Maybe a jewellery item, if that's what you are into, ring bracelet etc.
How about an engraved, gold plated, Emerald ECU?
Tell them about the bent treacle edges!

buy something that you can sell for the same value then go buy what you want  rolex or something like that comes to mind.

Buy a quality wristwatch. Plenty of choice at £1K. Longines, Tag, Oris to name a few.
Don't forget to haggle for a discount unless it's already in a sale.
Omega Seamasters at £1200 or so if you don't mind Quartz.

that's excellent!
Some really refreshing ideas there! Makes my weekend decision making a lot easier..
So I'm inclined to get either
- A decent watch, or;
- Tools of significant quality (now there's a good idea! Why didn't I think of that? I can already hear my wife: ".... MORE
tools??!! " But yes, a very durable investment. I even still have the metal concertina tool box my then-girlfriend bought me for my 21st
birthday in 1979!! (It lasted a lot longer than our relationship did anyway.)
- but I WILL also ask them on Monday whether a TIG welder is allowable.
BTW it's a long service award from work. I joined them 25 years ago in 1985, aged 27. At the last count I have 13 years to go to retirement
but somehow I expect my real retirement date will probably still be 13 years away 5 years from now.
I had toyed with the idea of investing my £1000 in a gravestone, or a funeral plan perhaps.. ha ha

I got left some cash by a relative when I was 22. Went out and spent £1100 on a Rolex Submariner and never ever regretted it. Love wearing it and I
wear it everyday, even in the garage.
And whats even better, it's now worth more than when I bought it new 20 years ago.
You'd be better getting a good quality secondhand one from a repuatable dealer than getting a new one. There's a great dealer in the Lanes
in Brighton I've used for years, he always has a good selection - Ocean Jewellers http://www.oceanjewellers.co.uk/.

We had a similar thing said to my wife and I as a Wedding Present. We are now feeling very upper class as we are now going to art galleries to get
something that we both like. It can improve your living area be close to your heart and also maybe not depreciate.
Thats what we chose anyway. . .
Track days ARE the best thing since sliced bread, until I get a supercharger that is!

You chose wisely, Jasper. Good investment, and good advice.
However, based on the current 2nd hand Rolex prices on their website my £1000 wouldn't even get me through the security gate at Ocean Jewellers!
I'd certainly need to put my hand in my own pocket for that otherwise a Rolex will be beyond me.

Yeah - you're right, I had a look recently and they were all out of my price range. They do have some nice Omega's and Tags at that price
though, and definitely haggle if you do speak to them about a watch!
If you're not living life on the edge you're taking up too much room.

Depending on what you want, how about time in a photography studio with the family? 1000 pounds should get you a nice framed portrait. It won't
gain any monetry value, but .... it may be worth while to you.
you could possibly arrange it outside so the car and some stained glass windows(*) are in the background
(* hope i've remembered that correctly)
