I woz robbed
Needed a full sheet of 2mm alloy to re-floor my new project & leave enough spare to fabricate a fuel tank.
Rang my one & only local stock holder, £67 + VAT, Ouch baby, very ouch
Well needs must & all that, not a lot of choice but to pay whatever it costs.
Now here's the bit that hacked me off.
When I ordered it for collection the next day, I asked if they would crop 3ft from the end of the sheet so as the larger piece would fit in the back
of my Jeep.
Went up there the next day to collect, they only went and charged me £5 + VAT for cutting the sheet
That really hacks me off, bleeding guillotine is right next to the sheet metal racks & would of took all of 60 seconds to do !
Could of had it delivered for £10
This would have worked out cheaper as the Jeep probably used up a gallon of diesel making the trip
Trouble is with having it delivered, would have been put on the flat bed lorry & would of had a load of steel dropped on top of it to stop it
flapping about.
Hey presto, 1 sheet of alloy nicely dented & scratched.
Well that's that off my chest
Do anyone else think I woz robbed ?

Yep. My local metal supplier only charges a £1 per cut, even if he has to use a band saw on tube etc.
It's not like you took a sheet in from somewhere else and asked them to cut it. Then that would be fair enough.

Tell them about the bent treacle edges!

Yep.
I found a local large alloy distributer who will sell to public a while back. That would have been around £50 with 5 cuts included. I was paying a
local robbing git of a stockholder double that prior to that.
Suppose if theres no other stockholder you have no choice and they will know that too.

What makes it even harder to swallow if the fact tha I have been a quite regular customer for over 35 years
Mind you, not by choice, they are the only decent stockholder within a 50 mile radius of home .
At least I got the sheet price BEFORE I asked them to cut it, cheeky gits charge more for the materials if they are cutting & you tell them you
want it cut before you have asked for full sheet/length prices
Well, I guess that's modern business for you.

Write to their MD advising them you are a member of this forum and there are other builders in your region who you could encourage or discourage to
give them some business. Ask for £35 back as a goodwill gesture

£5 per cut sounds expensive, with my supplier I get two cuts included, but he is a bit more expensive than other places, so it all works out about
even in the end
I don't about modern business though, business would have been charging for there time and facilites from day one, whether they hide the charge
in the price of the sheet or charge it seperately
Cheers
