Bearing strength of bolts - oversized holes ?
one for the structural engineers...
according to bs 5950 if I've got an M16 bolt in a std. oversized hole (20mm dia) then the bearing strenth of the connected parts is 0.7* that of
the std. clearance hole
....so what happens when you end up with a 22mm hole instead ?
I'm fairly sure its strong enough, but I cna't find anything in the codes to back this up yet
(and this customer will insist on seeing the calcs)
Help!

Software engineer answer, buy some 22mm bolts and pretend you always intended them to be that size.
Not useful, but an easy way out potentially.

unfortunatly its a 22mm hole on one part (the correct size for an M20), but some numpty has made the hole in the other part too small

Fit a collar in the hole, bodger's answer.
yours, Pete
I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.
