for tariff, just work out how many free minutes you need per month, and if they need to be cross network or not. then pick the tariff you need. i
recently got a new phone. Basically i wanted 200 or 250 mins per month, and i wanted a good camera. nokia 7610 has a megapixel camera and was my phone
of choice, i got it on O2 for £50 up front and line rental was £35 per month, for 250 mins and 50 texts.
the benefit of a contract is the subsidised phone handset. plus the minutes work out cheaper than pay as you go anyway.
go to carphone warehouse for good advice, and price matching.

The other good phone for a camera is the new Seimens - S65 I think - it's a 1.3 megapixel camera which is pretty good.
As Joel says, it depends on how much you will use it. The packages from 3 are very good value at the moment, but the choice of phones is limited,
although they are smaller than they were a year ago.

My dad works for siemens mobile so I have an sl55 (slidy phone) which is quite good and unlike other slidy phones they don't jam up! The Sl55
doesn't have a camera but I think the SL65 does if it is the one that andyps is talking about.

the s65 is the best camera ATM, with 1.3 megapixels. Joint with a new one soon to come out. I suspect the sl65 might have the same camera.

my mate says 3 has terrible coverage (reception). might not be universal, but dont trust what the vendors and networks say. i changed from t mobile
cos they had no coverage at my new house, even though the network reckoned it was fine round here.

3 themselves have relatively little reception where you can get all their services, but they partner with o2 I think to get nationwide coverage - you
still get the cheap calls, just can't watch live video etc. Not a problem if you only want to make calls, which is the main thing most use
phones for!
Since getting a camera phone I have thought one which takes pics worth looking at would be good, the quality from mine is pretty hopeless.

I've just got a Nokia 6230 thro' business. With Phone, Camera (640x480), video, radio, mp3 player, 'tinternet, wallpapers,
polyphonics, voice recognition and a loudish speaker for handsfree - I thought it would be rubbish. However, it's not! Strangely enough I
couldn't transfer my 300+ contacts from my 6130 via SIM Card and so far it's taken me 3 hours to type it all back in. My PC seems to have
a problem with the data connection via USB cable.
I must be honest and say I am a bit of a technohead, but find this a bit over the top. Afterall, ITS A PHONE!

yup i did andy. was gonna ponder it for a few days.
i might add, the 7610 is the biggest pile of crap ive ever bought. more bugs than an anthill. complete toss.
(you might notice im a bit annoyed with it...)
camera always thinks that the memory is full, even though theres loads spare in both memories. and now it wont connect to the computer. Im gonna take
it back... unless it gets smashed first...

Hellfire - not sure if both those phones have it, but you can transfer numbers via infrared - you probably don't want to know that after 3
hours, but might be helpful for the future.
When I got my Sony Ericsson I managed to use infra red to transfer the numbers from my old Nokia - I was quite impressed by that!
Joel - no rush mate, it's not going anywhere yet!

The 6230 doesn't have infrared AFAIK so I tried sending via bluetooth. Although it says it will do it, it wont. After contacting my local mobile
phone shop they agreed and said it's a problem with the 6230, GREAT. (NOT!)

I have a 6230, like it a lot. it does have infrared: it's on the right (the dark plastic that wraps around from the camera lens). I transfered
most of my contacts by SIM card but that's a bit rubbish, the sim card format doesn't understand multiple numbers per person, so they all
get duplicated. I deleted the duplicates and infrared-ed the multiple entry ones over individually.
the phone is java MDIP-2.0, I have IRC and SSH apps for it along with a few games. One of the big features is it's one of the first phones to
take MMC memory cards. they come with 32M and I got a 512M one for it. I can store a ton of mp3s, videos etc on it.
only annoying thing is the integrated menu and directional button, can be easy to mis-hit and get direction instead of menu. not a big deal though.

same with the 7610, takes some getting used to that button. my bro bought a 6230 today, with a USB bluetooth thingy that can be linked to 7 bluetooth
devices at once. pretty fly...

Sounds like a popular phone then the Nokia 6230...
I agree with the button-joystick type thingy! Pain!!!
The 32Mb ram card is good for simple things but too small for proper use.
It is still only a phone though...
I think it's a conspiracy amongst Moby manufacturers to put that many gadgets on them that you simply can't put them down!
