Used Car Check

Hi, who does the used car check where they go round and inspect the vehicle with a big long checklist and make sure it's ok (not just the check to see it's not been in an accident and is hpi clear etc). I thought it was the AA but apparently not. Also, any idea of cost?

I'm going to look at a 944 today and dont' have time to really have a good look, and i am not familiar enough with the car to know what i'm looking for really. it's quite cheap but i want to know if it's a bargain or just or a lemon. i figure the wrong one would set me back a lot so best to make sure...

cheers

I'm sure the AA used to do it. Was about £150 IIRC.

But if the car is a lemon your loss will be much higher (cost of purchase) than just the 260gbp

yeah, that's true, especially if what i have heard about the cost of porsche parts is to be believed! and they are thorough. It would def make sense if i was really keen to go for it, but the battery was flat just now when i saw it so couldn't start it or drive it - not going to make a decision yet and hopefully it will be ready tomorrow.

only prob is the interior, quite tatty, quite a few big holes in the seats. If i got it i think i would have to chuck the rear seats and replace the fronts with new sports front seats (the originals are horrible crazy black white checker pattern that i am sure would give me a headache after 5 mins) and then a wet vacumn. if all's said and done for £2000 i still get a bargain.

That would worry me! Are you sure that he really wants you to see/hear the engine running?

it had been stood for a little while and it seems the immobiliser had flattened the battery. bit stupid to have a car on your lot without being able to let people drive it tho, doesn't create a great first impression, or fill me with confidence with regard to the reliability of the car...

hopefully it hasn't sold this afternoon (although i doubt anyone would buy it without hearing it running at least, or driving it) and he will get it sorted tonight for me, i'll take it out for a spin tomorrow lunch before i decide anything more

Be REALLY critical - if it sounds the slightest bit rough, or you have a single doubt, walk away. I'd have already made up my mind to leave it alone...

never one for letting a bargain slip thru my fingers, but also have no problem walking away from a pile of junk (i've already got one of them in the garage )

my rationale is that if you aren't sure, don't try to convince yourself - it will have to be a very good drive for me to take it. but it's only 2 miles from work so it's def worth a look and if it is a lemon, then i have a frame of reference for the next one i look at.

before I biult the se7en - i was considering one of these... i think they are gorgeous.

A good one is quite rare - due to the cheapness of them. However, the parts are as you say expensive. I've been told the calipers are a particular weak spot - the 2.5 NA engine is the best one to go for - I've been informed.

Got half way through considering then started on the se7en - so not much mre info I'm afraid. Have a good search on the net for info...

i'm the other way round - just going to finish off my locost and sell it to help fund this (tho there will be an overlap where i am skint, quite a large one if progress remains how it has the last few months) - kind of losing a bit of heart with the little car. I think for a sensible (well it has a roof) car that goes and handles well, there is really nothing to touch it for under 3 grand.
