Website Building

Ok The chassis is almost completed and I have lots and lots of photos. Now quite a few of you asked for piccies etc when I first started this build so I'd like to set up a website with basic details of what I'm doing, maybe including a blog (not that I'll fill it in) and showing lots of pics.....

trouble is that beyond building computers and surfing the net (read that as looking for free porn) I don't know nuffin about website or how to go about setting one up.

Any of you guys know of any where that does idiot proof web hosting, just something basic that I fill in a few check boxes and upload the pics?

Cheers in advance peeps.

Or, something like my site, have a look.

All very simple and you just fill in a form to enter a story!

Ahh, I think you kinda got the wrong end of the stick.

With my website, I bought some webspace from http://www.web-mania.com, downloaded the PHP-Nuke scripts from http://phpnuke.org/ and uploaded them, and configured them etc.

Once all that is done, you don't have to keep uploading updated versions, you just fill in a form on your website administration area and it puts up the story.

I know its probably not a very good description but im tired

I recommend MSN spaces: http://spaces.msn.com

Andy Harding on here provides free hosting for Locost websites. As does Chris W. My site is hosted by Andy (Ta v much).

Built my site with thundersite (http://www.generalia-software.com/thundersite/en/) Very simple and easy to use. And automatically uploads everything once you have specified the folders etc.

My photos are hosted on photobucket (http://photobucket.com/albums/y197/flak_monkey/) As its easier to use someone elses gallery software than to set up your own. You get 50Mb of space, which is more than enough (thats around 200photo at their max size)

Hope that helps,
David

Hey Dorset,

I've just got into this myself and it certainly isn't hard!

I have a friend with lots of servers and nabbed some space off of him, but your best bet would be to contact the peeps Flak pointed out, Andy and Chris, as they don't seem to mind hosting locost build diaries.

You could then buy a domain, like I did at www.mnrvortxr1.co.uk from https://www.123-reg.co.uk as they seem to be very cheap for co.uk domains.

All that's left is to use some sort of website design program to build up your site. This is actually the easiest bit! I use Dreamweaver MX 04 which is a great bit of software that's very easy to use and will upload everything via ftp to your host aswell.

Good luck with whatever way you decide! Not that you'll need it...

Chris
