Apparently it was so hot it melted the engine!
Owner and his daughter were ok but suffered minor burns which considering the car was stationary when it went up meant it went up damn quick!!!
Scary stuff.

Oh Well at least the owner will have a project for the coming winter

Poor bloke, he must have been gutted. At least they got out OK.
Out of interest how much is an underbonnet automatic fire extinguisher system for an Indy?

That thought had already crossed my mind some time ago, just after my wife complained of a strong petrol smell in the garage. Tank OK... fuel line
OK... pump OK... ooops! A gentle little drip-drip-drip of petrol from the carb connection, down onto the inlet manifold, about 1" from the plug
leads and nicely warmed.
It was tight originally, but the tube must have 'eased' a bit under the clamp.
I did quite a bit of checking after that!

I invested in one of these systems for my car, seeing as it was intended to race, there is one nozzle in the cockpit pointing at the driver, and one
under bonnet pointing toward the carbs. Simple to install well I incorperated it in my build, so it was easy to plan out, dont know how simple to fit
after, I am sure it wont be too complicated!

Yeah...
i don't wanna be an ass....
and i don't say i could stay cool..
and if your dother is with you it is the last thing that you think about..
but 30sec..?? i think with a good extinqser in 10sec you have it down...
the poder of those things.. take away sow much oxigen......
would it help if i buy an anti flame spray...
and it put it on the inner side of the nose cone and bonnet???
also this get me thinking that my fuel pipes are 10cm from my escapes..collector tubes.....
but the true is i cant see any problems rising there?? would be an problem if the copper tube gets 40degrees??
maybe i need to bandage my pipes does that take away much heat???
can you then touch the pipe (i guess that i'm dreaming)
anyway i think that i'm gonna mount an automatic extinqer...one i made myself..
just using a bit of fiber..and an spring should do the trick...or a shoke like cable..to be able to enable an extinqser..
well we will see..
anyway a injection system is less hassle then a carbed one.. i think.. and hope..

£95 for a mechanical 2.25ltr system with nozzles as fozzie states, I think I know what I will be getting at Newark!!
It's not the financial loss it's the sheer time and effort I have put into the car, I think I would just sit by the road and cry!
It's good that he and his daughter got out fine but he must have been absolutely gutted and I can only imagine how he must have felt.
Rich.

I saw a program that was talking about car fires. Petrol will not ignite unless there is vapour and a spark, drip it onto the exhaust and it just
evapourates, no flame. Try the same with brake fluid and you get instant fire! That's the main reason that car makers try to protect the master
cylinder from a heat source in an accident, might be worth noting on cars with the exhaust and master cylinder on the same side.

Absolutley! I also saw a programme on a Discovery channel recently, called Myth Busters or something like that. They tried to simulate the movie type
petrol/car explosion and couldn't do it! Brake fluid is soooo flammable! Luckily, I have a 1300 xflow engine (exhaust other side)...but it is
also worth saying, or, emphasising, that most car fires originate from electrical faults! Best to be safer than sorry....IMO
