mg-f, Kseries help
hi,
my brother in law has just bought a mg f from the auctions and has asked me to take a look at it. Shock horror its nackered. the oil is full of water
so i assume that the head gasket has gone at least. so i will take the head off and further inspections should reveal more. problem is we have no
haynes manuel for the car and halfords say that they dont produce one. has anyone any ideas on where i can get a manual or better still has anyone had
experiance with this car/engine any pointers or advice on thing to look out for? i have heard the k- series engine is known for the head gasket going
and is it possible to skim the head?
Cheers Tim

you can skim the head , they even make shims to shim the head back out again , but if the head needs more than 40 thou off it, it could be scrap . i
think youll be ok with yours if it hasnt overheated badly .
the fire rings make a dent in the head !!!

I did a very similar job in my GTM Rossa.
K series in a mid engined car.
Buy these two tools (cam locking tool and torx driver for head bolts) and follow your nose - it's relatively easy.
Cam Locking Tool
Torx Driver
Nearly forgot. You will want to do the timing belt while you're at it. That means taking off the crank pulley which is f***ing tight. Ideally
you will have an impact driver to hand. If you don't you can get a 12V one from machine mart that does the job fine - I've done it with
this tool.
Machine Mart 12V impact driver.
Oh - and you'll need a 22mm impact bit as well.
That's about it. You can get a top end gasket set off ebay for about £25.

P.S. a metro manual will do along with any other information you may be sent

VERY important read a K series engine manual BEFORE stripping the engine.
For a MGTF manual

I 'think' that on the MGF, the engine (complete rear subframe is easier !) need removing for a HG change.
Try this forum, MG Rover, there are several experts on there. One goes under the ID of 'Major
Ingram'

It's possible to do an MGF head with the engine in.
Put it this way - my GTM looks like an MGF that shrunk in the wash, and it was relatively straightforward on that.
