Subwoofer

Im thinking of making an enclosure for a subwoofer for a DT project, using a 10" sub from Maplins. Is this a decent sub? I was thinking of making the enclosure about 1.2 cubic ft (13"x13"x13" ), is this about right?

Depends if you want a ported box or not.

You need to find out the box sizes for the sub. Used to have a JL Sub, which needed a specific size box, which the manufactures recommended in the instructions !!!

No i was thinking of sealed box. I'll look around and see if it says the manufacturers recommended box size anywhere.

You'll get better bass if you use a ported box.

There are loads of websites around on speaker cabinet design. Its a bit of an art, and there arent many people that are very good at it.

If you have a decent set of normal speakers you dont need a sub anyway IMO.

I know i don't need one (i've got a perfectly decent 5.1 surround sound system anyway), but i would like to try and make one, and i need a DT project

I know a ported box would sound better but then theres the added complexity of trying to work out what size it needs to be.

I'm sure i read somewhere that a ported box needs to be much bigger as well... Though that was for bass speakers in cars.

Bullshit. You'll get a different bass response, with the low frequencies peaking at one area instead of a linear response at the expense of all the others. Infinate baffle design (sealed) cabinets are a better design but are harder on the driver so require better drivers, hence why ported boxes are popular at the cheaper end of the market.

Whoever supplied the speaker should supply details of what sort and size of box to put the speaker in.
