Man hit by police car on 999 call
A man is in hospital after he was hit by a police car responding to an emergency call.
The 71-year-old pedestrian was hit outside Poole Hospital, on Longfleet Road, on Wednesday afternoon.

The man, who is from Poole, suffered hand, hip and facial injuries as well as a dislocated shoulder.

He is due to undergo surgery later but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. The 40-year-old male constable driving the car was not hurt.

This was copied and pasted from the BBC website... Anyone want to put odds on the policeman charged for dangerous driving? Driving without due care perhaps?

Lets face it the laws in this country are such that there is one set for the rich and powerful and law enforcers, and a whole other set for the rest of us plebs.

The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Very busy road. Was it by the petrol station ?
What speed was the copper driving at ?
Were the blues and twos switched on ?
Was the old man aware/able to see or hear the car approach ? Its always a difficult one to make a judgement on.

If it was your parent being attacked you would want the police to arrive bloody quickly wouldn't you ?

I'm surprised more police don't refuse to speed nowadays because of the possible repercussions.

Just my thoughts .
Hope the old fella gets over it.

Quite franky the chances are he was responding to a 999 call from someone who needed urgent help.

I agree if it was my children who were being attacked I would rather he breaks the speed limit and takes the risk, maybe others would rather he didn't and arrived once the attack had finished.

If the policeman was doing 25 and the pedestrian walked out from behind a truck without looking it would be the pedestrian's fault.

If the policeman was doing 90 in a 20 zone whilst looking at his radio then it would be a different story.

I take a dim view on most of the cases that go to the complaints commission. Most of them are people just trying to have a go, and the odd one or two are actually the officers fault.

There have been loads of people hit or involved in accidents with police cars on emergency calls. Most of which are due to the other person not paying attention to what they are doing.

The old bloke probably walked out between 2 parked cars or something...

Similar things happen when the police shoot someone. Well if you are stupid enough to point a BB gun at a person with a real one, in fairness you deserve to be removed from the gene pool. Likewise if you run aways from someone with a gun who tells you to stop. There doesnt need to be an inquest a lot of the time.

I bet everyone would complain if the emergency services refused to speed to attend an emergency....

I feel sorry for the poor bloke though...

OK, so a couple of times a year someone gets hit by the police/ambulance/fire when they're speeding to an incident, but how many people each year are saved for exactly the same reason? In the grand scheme of things you've got to go with what saves the most lives, and I'm pretty sure I know what that is.

That is, of course, the pragmatic view, and if it was my parent/grandparent then I would probably be pretty pissed off.

what then, if you just happened to be walking down the road with a table leg, or getting on a tube train?

The police do make errors sometimes.

im suprised this even got posted DS, its almost certainly a case of dozy old fella wasnt paying attention. But fortunately we have the IPCC to make sure that the policeman was following regulation, so all is well.

Like i often say, if you cant trust the police you're stuffed anyway.

Reading up on this on local news threads its SEEMS that the blues and twos were on and the police officer was speeding... however the old boy was already crossing before the police car came over the crest of the hill.

Remember this is outside a busy hospital so no parked cars. And there's a reasonable chance of people on crutches etc crossing.

As I said this is what is being reported on the local papers website, but I wasn't there.

I don't have a problem with the police speeding.... but there's a difference between speeding speeding and just driving recklessly.

playing devils advocate.....

strange that we seem to dislike the police for enforcing speed limits with cameras, yet we find it OK for same police to run over an old man with blinding faith that it was likely the old mans fault.....

or am i missing something here?
