Top gear suzuki Liana

Anyone see last week when Trevor Eve had a wheel come off?

Thats the second time its happened. Lionel Richie was the first.

When I played it back on my sky plus box, I got a lucky 'freeze frame' that showed the point of failure.

You can clearly see the lower tie arm floating free BEFORE the wheel detatches, with the lower ball joint stud poking upwards.

Seems to be a failure of the lower mounting point on the hub. NOT a loose wheel - there was no wheel wobble prior to it detatching.

I recon they could be in for some litigation if someone gets hurt as a reult when a defect as frequent as this occurs for the third time....

don't have sky plus and only seen it the once but I completely agree with you. My initial reaction was "bloody hell, what the fup caused that" I knew it wasn't the wheel

Their Lianas whole life is spent driving flat out around a racing track by the inexperienced. They repeatedly lose control and go off the road, crashing into tyre walls and signs bot to mention the last corner where they run wide, go on the mud a bit and then hit a side road square on. A lot is asked of these cars and it isn't too surprising that they go wrong.

none - rovers don't fail, they just get mis-managed

The poor car is having a damned hard life.... then again, two fails of the same type, perhaps someone should have a look at it (and maybe an engine refresh while they are at it)

On what evidence do you make such a sweeping and unjustified statement --- I presume on the grounds you won't be taken to civil court by a defunct company ?

It's easy to knock Rover but don't be too hard. Rovers are simply old, except the 75 of course. They were all very good cars at the time they were launched but rather than replacing them at the usual time they just kept facelifting them due to lack of money. That age made them visually and ergonomically behind the times but it also meant that they had time to work on the reliability.

Can't remember a Rover designed in the last 40 years (B.M.C. British Leyland etc in all their guises) that had a decent gearbox . The Honda and VW boxes where ok but the rest ?

super british ay!

Do you know this really pisses me off

time and time again

my dad had a 827 coupe luxury car for all but at the time 2.5k

never broke down once

AND

the little rover 200's we had a bog standard one on a V reg and even then its interior was far nicer than anything ford or vauxhall etc could offer! for the price range

good old jeremy clarkson trolls!!

Oh and Ive driven two new vauxhalls within the last 12months and there gearboxes are the worst design ever

they crunch into 1st third and poo reverse

Past 20 years my and most of my familys everyday cars have been Rover. The other cars were various Pugs, Citreons, Fords, all of which proved problematic. A solitarty Nissan was better than the rest but still gave problems.

Original 3 box Rover 216S bought at auction with 58k expired around 160k miles can't remember the exact figure but I think it had been clocked when I bought it anyway. In that time 1 clutch brake pads 1 wheel cylinder, 1 SU carb, rear and centre exhaust, starter. Then all the Honda switch gear bits started to fall apart so I dumped on the auction market.

Montego 2 litre, bought for pennies at auction. Was stolen with 148k miles on the clock. In 88 k miles of my ownership it consumed 2 wheel bearings, a clutch and 2 bottom ball joints, battery. Pulled like a train and handled well. Only real fault body was made out of tissue paper.

Rover 820sli sold at 178k miles last seen with 220k miles on the clock in 89 k miles my ownership I changed 1 steering rack, 2 CV joints, 1 lucas ignition unit, 1 raddiator. rear exhaust handbrake cable pads.

Rover 214Sei, bought new dropped valve at 16kmiles replaced under warranty head gasket blew at 17k replaced without problem it turned out dealer had assembled "new" engine from exchange head and short motor. Sold at 89K miles, only parts replaced alternator, suspension void bush, antiroll bar links, rear & centre exhaust, battery

Rover 414Sl -- from new to 48k miles, only rear exhaust and battery.

Rover 600, 48k miles to 138kmiles bought for 1100 pounds at auction again I suspect it had been clocked only parts changed rear + centre exhaust, then lambda sensor front exhaust, rear discs. Again all the Honda interior bits started to break at exactly 10 years old.

Rover 75 1.8 owned from 12k miles current mileage 23k only work done AC topped and handbrake shoes adjusted, first major service due at 28k.

Rover 45 1.6 --- bought cheaply at auction with 22k miles current mileage 34k miles, nothing replaced so far

Owned three Mini's never let me down.
Two SD1 V8's - both fab, but thirsty.
200 BRM - loved it. Looking for another.
MG ZT260 Fab. Won't be selling. Period.

Borrowed new Vectra CDti when MG went in for service, great engine rest crap.

I think marceyboy hasn't owned a Rover in the past, just his dad told him they weren't any good.

My father nearly bought a new SD1 in about 79, but dealer was a bit keen, so he walked out. Bought a Volvo 240, reliable, but oh so dull.

ive owned 2 SD1's one 2300 and one 3500 V8S, and i love the P5b coupe and the P6 V8,
the 2300 i had was a real nasty slow piece of junk...
216'S, montego's
and metro's drove those new and all broke down quite regularly, the gt turbo montego was fun, they still had clunky a box but held the road very well...when not being fixed...

my dad likes rovers ....but he has just bought a freelander...lol

Sat in a brand new MG in the dealers and whilst looking at various bits of trim managed to pull them off in my hand!

Even the stick on wheel arches were peeling off on a car that had never left the showroom, Shocking!

since when did a suzuki liana have anything to do with a rover?

Im not saying that the suzuki was at fault..... im making the point that the car isnt up to the abuse and after two failures they are running the risk of serious litigation if someone gets hurt the third time it fails.

Now the rover bit.

Being almost 47 ive been around enougth to have owned a few brit cars - Ive had too many to bore you with here as a complete list.... first was a triump herald, last were a metro turbo, rover 600 and Jag xjs. (one was a 1 year old R820e - probably the most unreliable car ive ever owned. I still liked it. It was sold off by my company for a grand (was 18k new!!!!) after three years. The flywheel came loose on the crank and knackered the crank!)

I would have loved to have bought british, (last in 1997) but the range was too old and crap compared to the other three dozen motor manufacturers I could have chosen. I didnt like the look of the R75 on the outside (inside is nice tho) and my money bought better cars (Mazda 323f zxi 24v, BMW 318, BMW320d tourer). Shame the 318 didnt have an engine tho....

I recently bought a laguna sports tourer as I didnt think that the R75 would be a decent diesel. Knowing now that its a beemer unit (as in my tourer) that might have had influence, but I still didnt like the old bloke shape.) And right now I would have had no warranty if i had bought rover.

So characterless french spaceship it was then.

When I bought my first car in the mid 70's the japs were only just starting to sell numbers in the UK, and french cars were damn weird. We had over 50% of our own market.

When rover went down, they had approx 3% or so of the market. What is the point of bitching about how great rovers were when clearly the british public were voting with their feet in just about every dealer apart from Rover.

and if you look on

http://www.reliabilityindex.co.uk

you will find that the MG TF has one of the biggest breakdown rates of ANY car, after short average milages.

The warranty co that runs the site says that 55% of all their MG TF claims are engine failures that are VERY expensive.

Just compare the TF figures to any other car on there and compare.

Go to any of the tech forums serving the UK going by the number of posts the big problem cars are Vauxhall and Fiat.
In June this year 10% of cars in the UK were Rover and bassed they are well under represented.

HI
I had a Rover 220GSI
I don't now how reliable it would be doing over 2-3k It never lasted that long.
It could have been a good car but Rover's help was crap like the cars reliabilty.
And for a bonus it's emisions were so bad it clogged the MOT tester's machine.
