twin tuner dvd hdd recorder

hi all.

i want a telly box that can do the twin tuner thing, and also record to dvd and hdd. Does it need to be specific for either satellite or cable tv? I dont want to end up stuck on either. Just want to avoid falling out with the missus about whether we watch Xfactor or american chopper!

Currently on ntl, would it replace the existing ntl box? im guessing it has to if its going to work its magic and the incoming signal, but i dont want to be stuck with ntl.

Any smart helpers?!

twin tuner

Hi, it all depends on its connectivity how your ntl ect connects to it, generally it will have a RF input for normal terrestrial TV and scart inputs for digital TV (SKY box) along with aux inputs for various additional equipment you wish to connect hi-fi, camcorder.

In general select a unit that will allow you to connect the most.

Scart * 1,2 or 3
RF
S Video
Component
Phono
HD

Ect, ect

Telewest has just launched this product. Not sure about the NTL launch just yet.
This will do all that you want.

Scientific-Atlanta's personal video recorder (PVR) technology will be used to launch Telewest Broadband's PVR service in the UK in 2005 using a new Scientific-Atlanta(R) Explorer(R) 8300DVB(TM) PVR set-top.

The STB is a better model than previous thought.

You can see a Telewest branded model photo here;

http://www.pettifog.com/telewest/stbpvr.jpg

More info follows;

Quote:
Scientific-Atlanta's technology leadership and flexibility to adapt to the specific requirements of the UK market were key factors in its selection as the exclusive PVR supplier to Telewest Broadband for a two-year period.

"We are capitalizing on Scientific-Atlanta's extensive interactive video experience and innovation by using their expertise to lead our vendor integration effort," said Eric Tveter, president and chief operating officer at Telewest Broadband. "This integration expertise will help accelerate deployment of the 8300DVB PVR and help deliver a smooth interactive video experience for our customers."

The current interactive platform is based on middleware provided by Liberate and the Conditional Access System provided by Nagravision. This vendor integration effort, currently underway and scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2005, will be followed by launch of Telewest Broadband's PVR service in the second half of 2005.

The new Explorer 8300DVB PVR will incorporate a DOCSIS(R) tuner for high- speed data access, as well as three video tuners to allow Telewest Broadband's customers to record three separate programs simultaneously or record two programs while watching a third - a step forward from the popular dual tuner solution in other Scientific-Atlanta PVRs. The set-top also provides two video decoders, which enables the user to watch a channel while archiving a previously recorded program to a VCR tape. In addition, the 8300DVB PVR will decode High-Definition Television (HDTV) signals, which will help Telewest Broadband to retain its leadership in the deployment of innovative products.

"PVR technology will become the enabling digital service for operators throughout Europe. PVR technology has been extremely popular in every market where we have launched it for our customers," said George Stromeyer, vice president and managing director at Scientific-Atlanta Europe NV. "Our research indicates that 92 percent of users are likely to continue their PVR service, and 75 percent say they have recommended PVR to someone not in their household."

I have added bold in certain areas of the press release.

To repeat, the important bits:

- 3 tuners. Sky+ has 2.
- Broadband 'on board', in line with the current Pace STBs.
- SA are the exclusive STB supplier now for 2 years.
- Launch in summer planned.

The free view version is the Humax pvr The Humax PVR9200T features a twin Freeview tuner, enabling you to watch one Freeview channel, whilst recording another onto its built-in hard disk or even record two different channels simultaneously, whilst watching a third* or playing back a previous recording!

When my video recorder died a couple of months back I bought a Philips DVDR3300 DVD HD recorder and a freeview box for approx £260 from Currys on the internet.

Kept the skybox and now can watch and record off sky or the freeview box and archive anything off to DVD.

One of the best features is any progams that I put in the sky planner with autoview automatically record.

Only downside is another 2 remote controls.

I refused to pay anymore to Sky.

I bought a technosonic pvr101 from Aldi last week, twin freeview tuners and 80gig HDD. You can watch one channel and record the other and timeshift the one you're watching if you need more beer, problem is mine keeps locking up when I put it into standby but they are aware of the various hiccups people have had with them and are releasing fixes or Aldi will refund if you want. I have a dvd recorder and can put stuff onto dvd via the scart connection from the box, something I used to do with the video to my computer via tv card. I need something to take the adverts out of programs I record now as I fast forward them at the moment.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

jim and pete, does either of your boxes replace the sky/cable box? And pete, yours is a twin tuner with a freeview box, can it twin tune with both channels coming from the freeview, or would it be unable to get two outputs from it (for example, watch itv2 and record bbc3)? cheers!

No still have the skybox. So to watch one channel and record the other I bought a freeview box as well. A DVD HDD recorder was essential to me so as to be able to archive stuff to DVD (particularly films for the kids which they can then watch on there own DVD player).

The freeview box just gets the free to air and nothing else but you can record one and watch another simultaneously. It doesn't get sky, only the news and travel channel.

Personally I find that most of the free stuff that is not available via the freeview box is total cack unless you are into shopping channels and sh?te quiz shows.
