peugeot hdi HELP ! PLEASE !
I’m in urgent need of a bit of help and advice please chaps.
On the way to work this morning in my 406 hdi (90 bhp) and found my self low on fuel the light had only just come on and from experience there
would be plenty left to get to the nearest station.
But it died. I didn’t try to start it and got the wife to get me a couple of gallons as soon as the garage opened. I primed it as it says in the
handbook and it started first time and I was off.
BUT when you let of the accelerator the engine just dies i.e. coming up to a round-about or behind traffic ect it does this every time whether
I am doing 10mph or 60odd I’ve done about 35 miles to work and back like this and its got no worse but isn’t getting better either. It cut out
about a dozen times at some very bad times on the way home. I have tried cleaning the fuel filter bowl but its still doing it. If I role the ignition
on and of a couple of times it starts up and I am of again. I suspect the lifter pump but can’t understand why it’s cutting out when I lift of the
throttle for a few seconds.
I’ve got Monday off and HAVE TO get it sorted or I am shafted...
So any help/advice and experience please .And yes I know I shouldn’t let it get that low but as I say there should have been plenty to get me to the
nearest open garage.

my citroen (same engine) used to do that when it had water in the fuel system, i think there was a drain for it some where.

think there's a drain on the bottom of the fuel filter, to get water out of the system, worth trying that.

I think ive sorted it.
car has been to the moon and back millage wise so figured there may be a load of crap in the bottom and hence it not having the tank range it did.
Cleaned the filter out again and put a load more clean fuel in and gave it a write spanking around the twisties for 20 miles or so.
Engine management light went out and it now runs as it did.
Thanks Warren

I have a mate with the same prob, cuts out at low revs ie coming to a junction / halt etc. Worse still its intermittent.
Its a common fault and Pug dont know what it is.
His has been to the main dealer several times, and they have changed hundreds of pounds worth of bits, and still it wont go away. (old bits back on
and money refunded now)
His car is low mileage. ie almost new.
let me know if it comes back again... as He hasnt flushed the fuel system out.
Do a google search on this... Its not just you.
Best Sell the car

Nah, doesn't sound like a water problem....had a daihatsu 2.5 do this with me once (on its last legs) sounds to me as if its still not bled
properly, give it another shot at priming and failing that try again....doesn't take much air to totaly put it out of action! Not sure of any
specifics with the pug engine I'm affraid so can't give any tips but it sounds like a bleeding problem....lift pump would let you down at
high revs and would also make it much harder to start (than normally) when left standing for a day or two.....HTH and good luck....Oli.

Had this on a new Xantia company car, spent so much ime on the back of a truck it was untrue. Anyway after many attempts it turned out to be the in
tank fuel pump filter sender combo unit. The plastic was degenerating and blocking the fuel flow, new pump never another problem in 157,000 in two
years!

There was a problem with some older TD Pugs with the low pressure pump in the fuel tank starting to break up and the bits 'n' pieces
travelled up the fuel line into the high pressure pump (might have been the other way round) and blew it to bits. Very expensive to replace (about
£600). But for what it's worth, it sounds like your car sucked up some crap from the tank botom.

check the electric pump in the tank under the back seat ,when the tank has a fair amount in the engine pump will draw it from the tank without the
tank pump working but wont when the tank is nearly empty, common on diesel beemers too
