2.0 and 2.8 capri diff(erences)
blakep82 - 10/12/08 at 11:35 AM

we worked out last week that the axle case was the same, but is the diff itself the same?

remember SHP told me i'd have to change the side gears in a 2.8 diff to accept the 18 spline shafts. thats fine, shafts arrived yesterday but won't go through the ends of the diff the shafts are just a little bit too big.

is the actual diff on a 2.8 different to the others? can these holes be turned in a lathe to open them out a bit? its only 1-2mm out

grrr

The 2.8i had an LSD as standard didn't it? None of the other models did AFAIK.

so did the 2.8 have bigger diameter shafts?
this is a bit of a nightmare...

Do you mean the ends of the axle tubes??

As long as you don't have to touch the bearing sufaces then why not use a rotary file to get clearance,(remember to wash the shite out when you're done

blakep82 - 10/12/08 at 05:16 PM

nah, the actual diff cage itself, the bit that the crown wheel bolts to, the holes in the end of that where the shafts go through to go into the side gears.

omega 24 v6 - 10/12/08 at 05:28 PM

Where the carrier bearings are pressed onto???

blakep82 - 10/12/08 at 05:31 PM

yeah, thats the one. the hole is only about 27-28mm, and the splined bit of the shaft is 30mm. there's plenty of metal on the diff

So you've bought new side gears which are Ok to the shafts and the halfshafts will not go through the bearing carrier holes. Never heard that one before. Your'e gonna have to get the holes bored out at a machine shop (need to be aaccurate/concentric as well to a degree)
Or source a lsd from a 2.8 c/w carriers/bearings.
Not what you wanted to hear and not really answering the question first asked about the differrence (you need to be sure before buying an lsd).
Sorry

I don't think that part will have been hardened but make sure the machine shop puts a small radius on the bore ends after machining.

you have actually answered the questions
luckily i've not bought the side gears yet, i was just checking they'd fit through before getting the side gears out. I spoke to motoscope as they sell side gears, and they said they take standard side gears and have them re-cut to 18spline by wire erosion, so i was going to find out about getting mine re-cut.

I've sent the diff off to a gearbox guy locally to strip it down and give me the bits back, so its not here to measure bits, but i can't beleive the 2.8 capri would have a different diff and shafts than the rest of the range. so why won't these shafts fit?
i do want an LSD for it, but haven't got the money to spend on it at the moment, i just need to get thisw car built and legal, and then i can spend money on that. i just need it working for now

Can't you do that with just std shafts then??

blakep82 - 10/12/08 at 07:09 PM

nope. its been retubed, and has full floating hubs with wheel 6 studs.

maybe i should just take the plunge and find a LSD with group 4 side gears already in there

blakep82 - 10/12/08 at 07:31 PM

i'm never gonna get this car done before the end of SVA lol

well, if the carrier can be modified ok, and the side gears re-cut before march, then its ok. i didn't buy the diff anyway, it came with the axle case... hopefully it should cost less than 1 new side gear...
assuming i don't run into other problems, which, of course, i will

Early 2.8's had standard stuff aka 3.0liter capris diffs, then it became the 2.8 special after around a year, got half leather and LSD.

blakep82 - 10/12/08 at 10:30 PM

were the half shafts bigger diameter too?
