i have bought an rs2000 alloy sump of ebay, but the sump plug thread is damaged.
the seller has offered to send me a heli coil and sump plug. does anyone know the thread size?
if hes just sending the helicoil you will need to buy the correct size drill bit and tap to fit it. when you buy the kit it comes with drill bit ,tap and a few helicoils you might be better off just asking him to send sump plug and a few quid towards cost of sorting threads
i have never used a heli coil, i have quite a good selection of drill bits and taps. or would i be be better taking it to engineering company.
was a bit annoyed it was damaged.
but the seller has offered me heli coil and plug or i can return it.
I have known engineers fit heli-coils for a stripped/cross-threaded spark plug hole on an alloy head. So can't see any reason why it
shouldn't work on a sump plug. If you are unsure about fitting the heli-coil yourself and would like peace of mind, just take it to a local
engineers, but they will only be fitting an heli-coil like you would.
Ultimately the choice is yours..
If you can find a suitable sump plug with a larger thread size I'd be tempted to get an engineering shop to drill the damaged thread and re-tap to a larger size.
I have a few Helicoil kits , if you let me know what size the thread is I may be able to help. I'm on the Essex side of Cambridge
hi rusty it appears the original was 12 x 1.75
so would need the same or bigger.
Will look tomorrow .
I would drill it out and use a stainless steel bolt and http://www.easyweld.com/ to make a repair.
Dead easy and very effective
Sorry mate the nearest Helicoil kit I have is 12mmx1.5.If you can find a suitable sump plug it would get you out of trouble. If you have enough metal around the sump plug it may be possible to tap out 14mmx1.5 and use a plug from something like a VW golf?
cheers for looking.
will take it to a machine shop and see what they sudjest..
