I have found a 4 digit number on my block just behind the alternator.

I take this from other posts that this is the engine number, but how can i age the engine from it?

It does not match the Vin Plate from the donor, as after 20 years must have had an engine change.

According to Burton Power the two letters on the vin before the last 4 numbers is used to age it, but not sure.

The engine's number is on the top of the block, on a bump that sticks out under the head.

I can't remember exactly where it is - just above the number 1 exhaust port rings a bell - but I'm sure someone will tell us shortly.

The engine number is on a lug on the top of the block, NS at the front. First 2 letters give year and month. Get the Burton Power catalogue, it has a full list of letters. My SVA tester says he will accept this catalogue as evidence of year of manufacture of the engine.

Good question, I am surprised nobody has asked this one before, not even in the last week.

I wonder what that link in between "Member List" and "Photo Archive" does?

I have cross referenced my engine number and found its build date of April 1972.

The engine came from a Sept 77 registered Escort.

I guess i will get a Q plate?

If You're worried about a 'Q', just change the engine number on the V5 and send it to DVLA. When it comes back, everything matches and Mr SVA is a happy bunny, and you should get an age related plate. This is assuming the donor hasn't been oficially scrapped!!

Donor has not been officially scrapped.

Im about to send the Amatuer Build Form To DVLA, so will be putting that number on that form too.
