do i need a special type of timing light to work with wasted spark ?
anyone find me a recomendation on ebay so i can spend my paypal money.
cant be sure the trigger wheel is set right and before i waste pauls time setting it up for the summer i want to be sure i have every thing set right
An inductive triggered light should work fine as long as you have plug leads to hook on to.
Any light that has a rpm indicator will of course read x2
Can't really answer your question direct graeme but I'm interested in the answers.
I can tell you that the one i borrowed ( snap on with advance and rpm readings) does not work properly. Even set at 20 deg advance it will not read
the timing correctly. It needs to be set at around 40 deg to get the marks to line up at idle and if the timing was THAT far out I doubt the car would
even start never mind run.
I have a cheapo draper one, £15 I think, this works OK with EDIS and Megajolt. I can see the 10 deg before TDC on the EDIS limp home mode, then if I
power up the MJ, I can see the advance changing with different rev ranges.
It has an inductive trigger light, but you need to make sure it's clipped on the right way over the ignition lead.

I just used a cheap Gunsons one with my EDIS setup. The EDIS trigger wheel's bolted to the original VX pulley, so I could check that the advance
was correct.
Other thing to remember - if you use the trigger wheel to measure TDC, remember the missing tooth on the trigger wheel passes the sensor @ 90 deg BTDC
on a 4-cyl engine...

Always forgetting that one. Mine's been in for months, I still have to keep reminding myself if I work on it...

If you have an inductive timing light and you can't get a good signal from a wasted spark on cylinder 1, try turning the sensor clip over so that
its arrow points in the other direction.
If that sounds daft, the alternative is to put the clip on the lead for cylinder 4 - it fires at the same time as No 1, but in the opposite
polarity.
