I have a vulkan 1720 xflow engine in my STM and it has always been a bad starter from cold. I am thinking of investing in an EDGE gear reduction starter from Burton power. Question .....has any-one used one of these? are they any good ?
They are quite expensive so your comments would help me make the decision.

What starter have you got fitted if its the inertia they are a pita.

However the root of the problem is likely be excess ignition advance at cranking speed. the engine is kicking against the starter.

Crossflows are well known for this, if you're using megajolt, you can retard the ignition map below 1000rpm so the starter isn't fighting against the spark. It worked like a charm for me...

have ytou done the easy nad cheap checks first?

- what capacity batery and in what condition?
- are connectors and wires of ample current carrying capacity?
- are wire connections making cood gontact?

Yeah as above I’d up the cable size and invest in some really nice battery connectors. I had a similar problem with my buggy when I upped the capacity from 1300 to 1600 till I redid the original starter motors supply and now it throws the engine round quite happily

first try starting it with a booster or jump leads at this will tell you if its the starter thats a fault or you need more power and clean all conections .(if you have 1300 pistons in it it will be a lot harder to start as higher compretion ).i got this starter on ebay for £10 cant remeber what it from but works better than the std one.

In New Zealand all the rally guys adapt Honda City starters to crossflows. You need a 5mm adapter plate to adapt the 2 lugs to the Ford three but it transformed my car as it now starts every time and for a very few dollars.

Sorry I do not have a template for the adapter for thoose interested as I bought it of a guy. But it would be easy to sort out. Just need to grind a litte metal out of the bell housing to clear one of the bolts.
