I've managed to badly stretch the R4 chain already - Can anyone suggest some top quality bike 530 chain that I can buy per link? (I only need
about 70 links)

how many miles have you done ? when i put a new chain on mine it stretches badly and i have to tension it three or four times before it settles down
. after that i re lube and tension every 100 miles or so but it only takes a tiny tweak to keep it tensioned after that but its worth keeping it
tensioned right as i watched how much it flaps around on the dyno when it was just a touch loose
Couldn't you put a tensioner wheel on it somewhere?
Incidentally, motorcycle chains flap a lot (up and down that is
)) - you want to make sure you're not overtightening.

Is your chain stretched all over or is it just in one spot?
On the hillclimb cars we run it is quite easy to locally stretch a small portion of the chain if you launch with a bit of slack in the chain. (Usually
when you have been rolled back a bit from the line).
You can check for this condition by tensioning the chain then rotating the rear diff and if you have any variation in tension, you have a knackered
chain.
We use DID530ZVM2 chains, these seem to stand up pretty well.
Several racers use EK Drag Race chain - supposed to be the best (not an 'O' ring type so you would need to keep well lubricated).
If your chain is just slack, it may be initial stretch but CHECK THAT NOTHING ELSE IS BENDING!!!
I have seen a few cars where the drivers are always tightening their chains due to mounts bending or chassis welds breaking.
