R1 Clutch Problems
minitici - 27/3/09 at 07:34 PM

Been finishing off an R1 (5VY) conversion (single seater) and got to the stage of trying to turn the engine over on the starter today.
Solenoid clicked but engine would not turn.
At first I thought it was a flat battery but it soon became apparent that the engine was locked solid

The clutch lever also felt very solid so I took off the clutch housing and found that someone had thrown a clutch in and not fitted the 6 bolts securing the coil springs (no bolts!) and the clutch plates and damper spring were in the wrong order..... needless to say, the springs were wound into a tangled mess and were locking up everything.

I'm not sure what else is wrong in the clutch but there does seem to be a lot of float in the outer basket about 0.5mm axially (and it wobbles when there are no plates between the baskets) - is this right or is there something wrong with the thrust washer behind?

After removing the clutch, I tried to start the engine - but you guessed NO SPARK

I've read a few previous posts so I'll check the ECU earths and the tilt switch (currently I have a blob of blu-tack in the tilt switch to stop the pendulum swinging).

The wiring loom and ECU were modified by Track Electronics to remove all the redundant features so hopefully they have taken care of all the other interlocks.

Have you tried firing the plugs through the diagnostics mode on the clocks

Edited to add: This is a link to a post I made when my R1 had no spark - some very useful stuff in there http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=107592

Thanks to the link to the old thread.

Unfortunately there are no clocks in the installation - all stripped out by Track Electronics!

I'll just have to look through the wiring diagram and try and check a few of the usual suspects.
