
Suggestions please.
I have just fitted an electric water pump and removed the normal one.
Installed the thermostatic control thingy which now pokes inside the engine and removed the original thermostat.
The problem i have is letting it run at idle it will overheat if it wasn't for the fan.
It seems like the pump cant pump fast enough.
Any suggestions or things to look at before i rip it out and go back to mechanical pump
Wont it still need the fan to cool the radiator, no matter how fast its pumping the water round?

My car has a standard mechanical water pump/system and if left running on the drive would overheat if the electric fan didn't come on
occasionally.
As above, you still need the fan to cool the coolant going through
the rad when stationary.I cant see that you have a problem.

You could pump 1000ltrs/min and it would still over heat without the fan when stationary. The pump speed is only for controlling the temp when air is flowing past the radiator much like the original thermostat did anyway simply by-passing the flow. Tbh I consider electric pumps completely pointless unless you couldn't fit a drive belt, for all the tiny amount of energy they save when the standard water pump is pumping too much and the waters simply recirculation within the block I'd wouldn't bother with it, just another thing to go wrong.

i've been thinking about this the wrong way. The fan never kicks in at all, i keep pulling out the relay and bridging the connections.
I have a new radiator fan switch.
I have ignition live going to pin 30 and 85
Pin 86 going to the radiator switch then going to ground and pin 87 going to the fan live
does that seem right
The relay wiring is correct just make sure the fan has an earth and the rad switch is working try heating in water and do a continuity test on it.
just checked the switch in the saucepan and i have continuity and the fan does have an earth too.
unless i'm panicking about the temp and it's just not getting hot enough yet.
I'm taking the temp reading from megasquirt but i have 2 other temp displays. One on a seperate gauge and the other in the acewell speedo.
Think i'll take all the sensors out and put them in 1 pot to see what they read
It's occasions like this that a pyrometer is a good thing to have......
