4speed - 5 Speed

Hi all,

I currently run a 4 speed box on a pinto in my F27, I want to go "modern" and install a 5 speed.

As my car is already built etc there are a few critical dimensions i need to check out.

A) Is the overall length the same, from Bellhousing/engine face to end of gear box rail?

B) is the distance from bellhousing/Engine Face to gear lever insetrion the the same?

C) is the bell housing the same diameter on the 5 speed?

I basically want to know if its a direct replacement and wont mean any re cutting of holed in tranny tunnel for gear stick and shortening of propshaft.

the 5 speed is longer
the gear lever is further back
belhousing is the same

and I believe the 4spd prop shaft would need shortening to compensate.

If you are running a type 3 box at the moment, a type 9 will fit straight in. (see burton power website for gearbox pics)

Overall length is the same, gearstick position is the same, only differences are:

input shaft (is 20 splines on type 3, 23 on type 9)

output shaft (type 9 is a bigger diameter)

gearbox mounting (type 9 is further back)

the type 3 box was fitted to early sierra's

apologies, I didnt see the pinto bit of your post. They should be the same, just an extra cog with the 5sp box
