Pinto Cam
philhoward - 15/4/09 at 04:15 PM

I am going to fit a ported and polished stage 3 Burton head to my 2 litre pinto and am wondering which is the best cam to fit for fast road use. I would rather go for something that does not need any modification to the pistons.

I am running ZX9R bike carbs and megajolt

Any suggestions welcome.

Hi i have a piper 285 cam fitted with the same carbs, but Bogg Brothers say if you have a big valve head use a A8 piper i don't know if you would need to mod the piston tops with a A8 cam,
My 285 fitted with no modifications
Give Boggs a phone call there very helpful

285 duration is a safe bet and should work well from 2500 to 7000.
You should be able to run a 300 duration cam but if you skim the head you will need to check clearance.
Talk to Burtons.
Go for about 10.2 to 1 compression ratio and a red line of 7200 with un modded injection rods

I would look at the FR33 kent or the 285 piper.

If its for road use it will be a lot more driveable than with a race type cam.

where are you and what you doing with your old head?

You could go a little more radical than the fast road cams mentioned above and use a race cam like a Kent HT1, to get the best out of it you would need to skim the head and it will be a little lumpy on idle, it really depends on your bottom end too, if it's pretty bog standard you might find that the extra revs and strain on the rod bolts would make it unreliable.

I am in New Milton, Hampshire. I am not sure what to do with my existing head yet. Why do you ask?

What BHP are you looking to get out of your engine ?

I think you'll find as many answers as there are cams! - I have an FR34 fitted, but not running properly yet.
