Overheating Zetec- Comments please??
Krismc - 17/4/09 at 08:45 PM

Right ive got a zetec engine in my kit and its got a POLO rad, Raceline water rail and a small header tank.

First Problem, My thermostat wouldnt open due to water going from water pump, round engine, into water rail, through first hole, into header tank.

So my engine overheated and water came through blow of valve on header tank every time i revved.

Second Attemp (for Sva)

I removed the Thermostat, and removed the pipe from water rail to top of header tank - so that its more of a expansion tank.

It still overheated but it came out through cap on water rail.

See pics.........

What i was thinking of doing after speaking to coozer was, running top pipe of header tank into bottom hose coming from rad, fitting a differant stat(any ideas), getting a better water pump internals as im running backwards at moment.

Do i need a better Rad?, low temp cutting in fan switch? Differant plumbing?

Mine has the raceline rail and a polo rad.

Mine will sit all day with the fan cutting in and out. But ive not had it on the road yet.

Rail to rad and rad back to water pump. I have a small catch tank to collect the expansion and just top it up every now and again.

This is how I understand the rail should be plumbed. I know many dont like the rail but for me so far so good.

Switch and stat have same range as mondeo.

Firstly is your water pump rotating the correct way and which pump are you using?
Secondly what have you done with the other 2 connections on the thermostat housing, have you blanked them off? If so you could run 2 long lengths of pipe from each of those 2 connections and `T` them into the bottom hose on the rad as you have done with the expansion tank. The extra water circulation may help with cooling.
I`ve just fitted a polo rad on my zetec and it is plumbed in exactly like this with no problems. I don`t have the raceline rail but I do have a thermostat fitted.

Erm, not sure what you mean about the way you have plumbed yours- think its the same.

I have blanked the top connection to the header tank, the bottom connection is running to the top hose of rad, the bottom rad pipe goes to the pump. and the top rad pipe goes to the water rail, there is another pipe on the water rail and this is now blanked off.

...oh and yes my water pump is running wrong way but i was told it would be fine, i am working on either a pully to make it run right way or another water pump.

I would suggest getting the pump to run the right way Kris, then the bypass you blanked off plumbed into the bottom hose.

All you need to do is install an idler and get a longer belt....

Kris,
just done this diagram to show how mine is plumbed in (2.0 zetec). I`m using the standard 2.0 water pump running the right way off the back of the belt.

Yea i agree, thats probably the simpliest option, its just where to mount the pully, i have no holes left.

Make a bracket that mounts on the steering pup bracket, still got it?

No i didnt get any of them brackets with the engine. Darn. ill have to have a look when i finish work tonight or 2mora.

Ill take a pic of every thing for opinions
