Here we go again, having put 400 odd fast miles on the MNR this weekend I'm not happy with the gearbox, or maybe the diff.
The motor is wicked when the VVT kicks in but the thing just runs out of gears and speed... its got 200lb/ft and I reckon it can be used a lot
better.
So, first step is to get the Supra turbo box I have lying in the garage onto the back of the ST motor. I'm going to have a crack at machining a
FWD box to accept the Toyota box. Splitting the box it leaves the bellhousing bit that is the same depth as a type 9 but a bit too deep for the new
one.
Then a 3.38 diff, BUT, I'm not willing to pay £300 for one, its just plain greedy.
Any advice, tips or comments?

would it not be more cost effective to change to a higher tyre profile or even a larger wheel? just a thought, something I use to do with the
Landys...
Is the ST motor running on ZX9 carbs?

what box do you have ?
ideally you need a 2.9 1st or even a 2.2 1st .
are you saying it just runs out of top speed ?
Type 9 in atm, crap 3.8 or whatever 1st. Also has a bit of a notchy change with the short shift fitted, dead sloppy without.
The Toyota box has a 2.9 first, smoother change and is lighter. Shorter input shaft means I can possibly move the engine back a bit more with a
shallower bellhousing.
Also adapting the FWD box to fit moves the starter up under the inlet, has a compact hydraulic release bearing and weighs nowt compare to the type 9
one.
ive seen the DSG getrags welded to volvo bellhousings .
basically , find your installed length , get both machined down and weld back together , not cheap .
youll need to be able to centre them together aswell .
what about fitting a CR type 9 ?
second hand maybe ?
i think 200ft/lbs may be a bit more than a type 9 would like to see too .
CR type 9's are way way out of my budget.
Centring the box is dead easy, using the original input bearing as a guide.
Or, I can make an adapter plate to use the Toyota bellhousing.

200lb/ft will destroy a Type 9 in pretty short order - if its not a 2.8i one. Even then, you're on borrowed time..
A diff change would be a) cheaper and b) quicker. Wheel and tyre changes might also be an option depending on what you have to start with..
