Yep I had a go.

I can't say that it definitely made a difference but it hasn't spoilt anything and I learnt a lot about my engine and head whilst I was in there

I have some photo's in my Archive of the head before, during and after. Some shots showing the valve shrouding on the MX-5 engine, some showing the bare head, shots down the ports and the final head chamber volume measuring set-up I used.

I picked-up 3 Tungsten carbide burrs on Ebay for about a fiver and used these in my electric drill. They certainly chewed through the aluminium of the ports - you have to be very carefull

ETA: the pictures are in the 'General Stuff' folder.

yup, but it was a motorcycle engine.

Its pretty easy as long as you have the right tool for the job, and repeat over and over as you work, "I can take more off, but I can't stick it back on"

Just make sure you understand where the valve guides etc are, so as not to compromise the reliabilty of the engine.

Good few years ago yeah, ported a Mini head using Vizards wicked book of making the A series go a wee a bit quicker..

Me and my brother did some porting on an A Series head with a 100Watt Minicraft drill (well before Dremels etc. became available and popular). Used the David Vizard bible as per Triton, and the engine went very well.

I thought about it but I couldn't get the dremel past the ear wax.

There is an article somewhere.... someone used water and a sheet of glass to volume balance the combustion chambers in the head..... Amazingly simple!......

Using a titration tube to measure the volume of each chamber and removing material to balance them!

Is that not called Trepanation

Yes, that's what I did. Water with a little anti-freeze to colour it.

Yep, the best book is How to powertune Ford pinto SOHC engines by Des Hamill. Very clear and good advice
