
is there a standard setup for the R1 carbs? the car has now passed sva and need to alter the carbs to make it run both safer and sweeter. i know it will need an rr session but is there something i can do in the mean time? any advice on needle and jets would really help as i have al weekend to play. at the momeent its runing sausage filter and not airbox. thanks
Balancing the carbs never goes amiss - got my car running nice and smoothly (also a 5JJ).
Could explain, but easiest way is to have a tinterweb search on balancing bike carbs (do it by ear using a tube rather than splashing out a fortune on
a proper meter - a friend set mine up and showed me how to do it, dead easy)
i have never done this before though and dont want to make a mess of things. if you have any more info it would be great.

i did have the manual for the R1 but due to various factors of car istallation eg exhaust i think it changes from standard set up. its very lean at moment so need to richen it up a bit for a start.but need to know thar im doing it safely!
Daniel do the carbs have dynojet needles & jets or standard ones?
If they have the standard ones fitted it will be running very lean & it is very unlikely that you will be able to richen the mixture up enough
even on the highest clip setting, due to you having a pipercross foam filter & straight through exhaust can.
IMO Getting a jet kit is essential to set up the mixture correctly

we dont know what type of needles are in atm.
If you remove one of the carb top covers & release the needle, does it have writing on the needle or are they blank?

i will need to look tomorrow. need it to be safe as im driving 75 miles to daytuner in harrogate.
If you have dynojet needles & jets fitted already then you will be able to richen it up ok but if not, then its not a good idea to drive 75 miles on a lean mixture & you would be better taking it on a trailer to Damien?
spoke to damien and he said get the standard airbox and drive up with bonnett off.and take it steady.he said it wont run properly and will cut out a bit once revs rise.so no major damage will occur. i want to make sure its fine before i do this.

not booked in yet but have spoke to him and said as soon dvla have done their bit we will go for it
If the needles have 5 clip settings & have 6DEY5-53 on then you have the standard yamaha needles, if they have 6 grooves & no numbers/letters
on them, you have dynojet needles.
If you are fitting the standard airbox & have the standard needles then put them on the highest raised setting (circlip on the lowest groove) to
get the richest mixture possible.

i have looked at needles and they have 5 grooves. do they go on the end nearest tip of needle or the furthest lip away from tip of needle? do i need to alter air mixture screws/jets? as they are fully tightened atm. cheers lee. hows the car coming along?
Daniel the lower down from the top of the needle the circlip is placed the richer the mixture will be.
The pilot screws should be screwed in all the way clockwise and then all turned anti clockwise approximately two and a half to three turns.
