hi all, are sierra lsd all 7inch or are there 7.5inch ones?

the lsd i am looking at has in shafts but i have push in ones, would the bolt in shafts go in to drum brakes without modifaction?

or can i use puch in shafts for in a bolt type diff.

as well i have a 1.6 pinto but hopefully a 2.0 of some sort will fall in there.

would a lsd help?

as well what sort of ratio should i be looking for?

there are some 7.5 inch ones, granada cosworth was fitted with 7.5inch

Cant answer all your questions but will try to answer the ones I can...

For the diff brackets on the Indy AFAIK you'll need the 7" diff.

You can use the push-in shafts on a bolt-on diff but not the other way around.

The push-in shafts are the ones that come with drums. If you wanted discs all the way round you'd need bolt on shafts or you can get the brackets to fit discs on. Alternative would be to get custom-made driveshafts but that is PRICEY!

For a Pinto, I would think a 3.62:1 ratio diff would be sufficient.

I asked a similar question not long ago.

The answer is, you need a set of the larger diameter push in shafts (~28mm) and a set of bolt on shafts. Cut the joint apart on the inboard end of the push in shaft and pull the joint off the shaft. Remove the inner joint from the bolt on shaft (remove the circlip) and push it onto the other shaft.

Then you have a set of bolt on shafts inboard and push in outboard to suit drum brakes with LSD (exactly what I am doing!)

I still think 3.92 is the ideal road diff for a car engine. 60mph is about 2900rpm and 70mph about 3400rpm. So you get reasonable cruising economy and the best acceleration possible from the std ratios.

For the MK you will want a 7" diff which are available most commonly in 3.62 LSD from the XR4x4 sierra.

thank you for the info, i got my diff and half shafts out of 1.6 sierra,

so if i got a lsd diff and shafts, could i make the rear end work?

or what car does the 28mm push in shafts come off?

as well what price is a sierrs lsd?

as i am looking and what to make sure i do not pay to much.

LSD's are between £60 and £150 depending on your luck with ebay or the scrap yard.

There are 2 sizes of push in shaft for the sierra, ~28mm and ~23mm not sure what was fitted to what, the only way to find out is measure some.

If you have some 28mm shafts, a set of bolt ons and a 7" lsd you are away....
