I'm building a cable operated paddle shift for my R1 powered single seater.
What type/size of push/pull cable do most people use?

There seem to be plenty of C33 teleflex/morse outboard control cables on the Bay. Are these beefy enough?
(most use 10-32 UNC rod end fittings).

I need a cable about 8 foot long - any good sources?
(Don't want to pay ££££'s)

I bought an "aircraft grade" cable from a well known kit company / supplier, which lasted about a year. So I bought a cheapo morse / c33 cable, fitted the old rod ends to it and have (touch wood) done another 2 years and 5,000 miles on it.

I got mine off ebay.

I fit outboard motors to boats in work, and we either use the engine manufacturers ones or teleflex ones. I think we get the teleflex ones from Bainbridge, its a marine supply place. Don't know if its trade only tho, so you might need to pop into your local chandlery. You can get them any length you want. They seem to last quite well, I've worked on loads of older boats that are still going strong. As you keep them greased they seem to be pretty bullet proof.
