Right, I'm going up, down, left and right trying to identify exactly what my engine is!
I'm trying to source all the necessary re-con parts for it and keep getting asked for all sorts of IDs etc.
The numbers I can find on the engine are:
14A87
HD09391 (not too clear)
21030
165 HM6015 JA (I think)
Sorry for some of the vagueness, but I'm looking at one of the piccies I took after I stripped the engine down, so can't be 100% until I get
home.
I know it's a 1.6 and from a 1987 Sierra.
I've found supposed ID info on the web, but it mentions codes such as LC, LS, LA etc. and I can't find any of these
Anyone help please?
JB
does it have 165 cast into the side in big letters?
HD09391 - is that on a flat bit on the side (i.e. the engine number) HD is the date code for march 1987

I think the code your looking for is the one on the donor's vin plate

Yep, it's definitely a 1.6 and has the '165' on the block.
And yes, the HD... is on the flat raised bit just forward of the engine mount holes (offside)
Think I've got the VIN plate somewhere so best check it. (I was going to try and get an age-related plate as I also have the v5 which still has
the old owner's details on it, but the car hasn't been SORN'd and I've had the engine and gearbox etc. for 3 years.)
JB
you still got the original reg?
alot of motor factors can search of the reg plate.
otherwise ask on turbosport.co.uk they were very helpful with my x-flow.
If you have the engine number then write to Ford's technical dept. and request a letter confirming the date of manufacture. They'll do this for free (or at least they did when I wrote to them) and come IVA/DVLA time the examiner will be more than happy to accept this as proof of age.
you'll find that most of the parts for your engine are the same as most other 1.6 pinto's
but there are a few versions of that engine (e.g. the E-Max has a different bore and stroke) and I don't really know enough about the 1.6 engines
2.0 pinto's are easier.....
the haynes manual will tell you the engine codes that were fitted, and might give you some clues
loads of manuals here if you need them (and look in the 2 in the 'other' section at the bottom of the page
)

Well, checked the VIN plate, and it seems I have the E-Max engine. According to the list I found on the net to see what the numbers mean, it says that
the LS was either a long-stroke small bore in a 205 block, or a 1.6 E-Max. As I have the 165 block I can safely asume it is the E-Max.
A little note alongside the ident info also says "to be avoided" !!
So I guess I've bought a very economical but crap engine??
Anyone got a 2.0L Pinto they want rid of

if it runs just now - you can always swap it later
just don't waste any money tuning it

I'm guessing I've got the Bosch Hall Effect distributor too (red cap) so apart from the coil, what else will I need to make it go sparkety bang?
