Advice on sourcing engine
200mph - 2/6/09 at 11:38 AM

I've made the decision to go with a 2.0l zetec, of which there are plenty (and I can't convince myself to go with the BEAMS engine as much as I want to )

Anyone able to offer advice on what to avoid/look out for in terms of sourcing an engine. Fleabay is the most obvious place (other than other locosters) but I'm a tad anxious about buying something like an engine this way.

Thoughts?

Mark

Unless its a very good deal, I would want to find a running car (mondeo) and then remove the bits I wanted from the car..

FocJon and myself found a mondeo locally and took all the stuff we needed for £150.....

Chances are you will want to spend time/money rebuilding the engine anway before it goes in the car so its not the end of the world if its history is unknown!

Always ask for pictures and receipts if they claim to have had work done. A common excuse is "I paid cash so haven't got a receipt", but any serious builder will take photos to prove. Or ask for the name of the person/company who did it, and check with them as a backup.

I've sold a few engines in my time, and I've found the best way is to allow the buyer to see/hear them running. That way, they can inspect them and it might highlight any issues prior to purchase. If they've got any service history documents to accompany the vehicle/engine, then even better.

Or, scrapyards will normally offer some sort of short term warranty, but that puts pressure on you to get it fitted, and it's only a veral contract so not really worth the paper it's written on!

As much as possible I'd want an engine I wouldn't have to rebuild, which I guess would rule out most ebay engines?

I have a rather unfortunate set of time pressures that mean I want to get the car to running on its own power in as short a time as practical.

Although this would cost more I suppose.

Might be a bit too much pricewise but if you want peace of mind I think GBS still sell them as new for £750.

Pu ma engine would be another choice. I love these engines.

i think if you talk nicely to them the price can go down to £690 i believe.
brand new, sounds alot of money but imo its worth the peace of mind that its not been messed with by someone who doesn,t know what they are doing then get rid of it on the bay etc.
if it was me i,d go for NEW engine. might be cheaper in the long run.

I'd be prepared to spend £1000 for everything, i.e. engine, box, TBs, exhaust etc and I'd probably want 160bhp for that.

A new engine might not be a bad idea as I get a bit of a lottery feeling otherwise.

The next seed of thought is how much more would I need to get a new plate on the car?

a mate of mine bought a 2ltr zetec from GB sportscars (whatever they call themselves lately) & has put bike carbs & mega thingy on etc & has had it rolling roaded at approx 150-160bhp, not sure if thats at wheels or flywheel but basically he has a cracking new engine set up & it cost him £1000 .
makes sense to me
