Sierra diff free play?
maximill666 - 4/6/09 at 09:20 PM

How much free play when rotating forward & back should there be in the input side of a sierra lsd diff?

The reason I am asking is that my diff has developed some free play & started clunking, about 10-15 degrees if the input shaft/prop is rotated back and forth.

Thanks in advance

My 3.92 LSD does the same thing. I just thought that was normal!

10 to 15 deg's sounds a bit on the excesive side. The backlash when setting the diff up is about, (I think),0.5 or 0.6 thou, so any movement at the input flange is going to be very small. Cheers Ray
Edit to add
Just read the rebuild manual and that states 0.01 mm backlash, which is ,(I think), approx 0.5 thou.

there's been a few threads started over the past few weeks and everyone seems to question the movement. i think the last 3 or these threads said they got 10-15 degrees. . i don't know the figures but it seems a common amount

I get a similar amount on mine probably 10 or so degrees. Clinks a bit if you pull off very slowly, but then there's no compliance in the prop or diff mounting like there was in the Sierra and in mine the engine/g/box mounts are almost solid too.

All the diffs I have had have had very little free play.

The backlash is set to 0.01mm which equates to about 0.25mm on the input flange or there abouts. Any more and its knackered or needs adjusting.

I've had 4 diffs fitted to my car over the last 2-3 years. I've had a couple with some play 3-5 degs at most but they did clonk a bit at low speeds and one felt a little rough when crusing with little load.

The two I bought recently both had almost zero play when dry but no play when filled with oil. I fitted one of them which was straight off a donor car and its been the best diff I've had on my car, no clonk and very smooth when driving.

Running them a little loose may lower the temps of the diff but you risk a bit of roughness as I've found.

Does anyone have a guide how to adjust & set the backlash on a sierra diff?

You need to turn the castellated nuts either side, and will need a DTI to set it as well.

I will upload the rebuild manual later and pop a link up.

Cheers,
David

Manual now uploaded. The complicated stuff starts if you want to take the pinion out for any reason.
