pinto on 40's - realistic mpg on a run?
FASTdan - 5/6/09 at 06:59 AM

I'm starting to bottle going to le mans in my indy - main sticking points are cost as I dont really know what mpg it'll do at 70-80mph cruise, and of course the fact it has no screen or roof.

What sort of mpg should I expect on 40's (35mm chokes). engine is healthy with good compression and no rattles.

My alternative is to drive my dull pug 206hdi which'll do 50mpg all day long.

There are 3 other tin tops in our convoy too.

My Strike with 2L Fiat TC used to do 15~20mpg on 40's with 35mm chokes, not the best carbs in the world if your worried about economy...

Why not try it out? Fill your tank then go for a drive on the motorway for an hour.

Then refill your tank and note down the miles you did and how much fuel you used.

Then report back here

I have 40's with 35mm chokes on a 1.8 zetec I reckon on about 22 to 25 mpg driving it as it should be driven all depends on how hard u drive it. I did 94 miles the other day driving slowly and topped the tank up with £13.50 worth of juice which equates to around 30mpg. Make sure the carbs are set up as good as they can be and only boot it when you need too

Fit a good twin-choke webber. Likely to get good mpg and still have the pleasure of driving your indy to Le mans.

But what is cost against so much pleasure. Its not every day you go to le mans and in a few months time you would have forgotten the real cost burden. Plus I imagine it is already costing a few quid to get there. Whats a few more quid????

Snigger

For comparison, My R1 BEC will do 30 MPG on a B road blat and 20 MPG on the track. I suspect it would do 35 MPG on a steady cruise but have never tried it without getting an itchy right foot.

My pinto on twin 45's with 38mm chokes used to do 25mpg on a run, averaged about 20mpg on blats or 16mpg on a really fast run.

Fastdan,

I was concerned about this but I've found with my Cat I get between 25 & 30mpg on a run. That's with a std cam but modified head.

This was on motorway only though. Once on the lanes and squirting it around, it does drop!!

HTH

Martin.
