Basicaly Im fairly new to the idea of a car engine! I have no idea which of the above is going to be the easiest to install or the most reliable or
what? Any advice would realy realy be awsome!

black top is the newer of the two engines. both easily tunable with a good set of cams etc
To install they are the same. The blacktop is a development of the silvertop so in theory is better.
Ultimate Zetec is probably the ST170 engine.
All are failry easy to install as they bolt straight to a type 9 or MT75 box.
Main difficulties are:
1. Ignition - either Megajolt if using carbs or Megasquirt for EFI, or other aftermarket ignition system.
2. Fuelling - Webbers or bike carns with appropriate manifold or throtle bodies if going EFI.
It is a common choice so pretty much anything you want to go for will have been done before.

1.8 Silvertop is the easiest to turn RWD and pre 95 gets you away from a CAT.
Then its straight forward to install a later Blacktop .
I used a Feb 94 1.8 Silvertop for the SVA then changed it for a ST170 using the 1.8 flywheel and clutch. All I had to do was put an idler pulley for
the waterpump going the wrong way.

Not legal to tow a trailer. Passed my test in 2004...
I am the same, even though I drive a 28 ton fuel tanker I can only tow a trailer upto 750kg
