I have a MK Indy/1995 898cc Fireblade running on carbs which failed the SVA on emissions and noise level too high. With the re-test fast approaching
what do I do.
I have exchanged the small MK exhaust for the larger one with integral cat which appears to have reduced the noise but what about emissions. I am
currently using ITG freeflow foam socks, I have tape these off as the engine will not run, far too weak, I intend to fit Dyno-Jets post SVA. Fitting
a lambda valve is pointless as it's carbs and therefore no ECU fitted, so I suppose I have two options. 1, Fit an original Fireblade airbox and
adjust the carbs. 2, Prove the engine is too old for the new style emissions test. If this is the action recommended this in turn raises two more
questions. 1, Has anybody got a Fireblade air box I can buy or borrow. 2, how do I prove the age of the engine, I showed the tester the Haynes manual
with the engine number proving it is a 95'RR-S. He said he needs the exact month of issue as this is the change over year. Your help and thoughts
are very welcome. Cheers Barry.
Fitting an airbox will help a lot both with the runningand the noise
I can lend one if you can't eBay one or get one closer to home
As far as proving the age I don't know how you will get that sorted uleas the dvla will do a search for you or you can find the doner docs ?
Also cant remembr whether the criteria is date of registration or maufacture asthey coulb be very different, the numer range as per the haynes book
etc must be manufacture date

Try the Honda owners club, they should be able to tell you what you need and give you something to show the tester. Failing that try Honda UK in
London, they have always been helpful to me in the past.

Just done a bit more digging for you and found this, http://www.redliners.co.uk/ they have engine number dates in their technical section (via
features link), only year ones but if you send them an email they should be able to help you.
Cheers

Thanks guys for that, very useful, might be in touch Re-Man for airbox if possible. Once again thanks and why do we get up so early on a Saturday, are
we a bit keen or what?
Bary,
If you can fit the original airbox this is probably your best bet, you may need to rotate it 180 deg's. This will also help with the induction
noise.
I Scraped a pass on noise even after re-packing my exhaust, take some wire wool and a long stick, if you are within 1-2 dB it may be enough.
If your engine is pre 95 you shouldn't really need the cat, might be time to try honda for a nice letter..
Mine passed on emissions using the standard airbox and no cat with no modifications or adjustments and seems perfectly drivable with out
re-jetting.
If your emissions are a bit high on test, distract the tester and loosen the carb rubbers, this will alow air to be drawn in after the carbs and so
weaken the mixture, just dont' forget to do them back up again.
What figure did you put down for max power RPM, might be time for another letter from 'honda'.
Have you got your speedo sorted yet ?
