what power through a t9 box 150 200 300hp
any anwers will be good thanks,the other thing you have to think is that with a car that waighs 560kg there is not alot of load so i think the std
items should hold out quite well,im not talking long term,just through the summer,
so what power do you think
The gearbox will only 'see' as much power as you can transfer to the road.
Once the power/torque at the tyres exceeds the grip (weight x coefficient of friction) - the wheels will spin and the gearbox will see very little of
the extra torque/power.
So I would say it will live with over 300bhp in such a light car with 2WD. Mainly because after about 200bhp you will spin the tyres and unload the
gearbox.
Its torque that the 9 doesn't like.. my engine has 200lb/ft so I'll post on here the milage when it lets go.... over 1000 miles so far

It's not realy so much the power that the box can take but the general weak desighn. Things such as sync-roes will be the first to break up. The
extra inertia of the 5th gear being accelerated and decelerated causes a lot of problems which is why so many still opt for the 4 speed 2ltr box
instead. But in general even a straight cut type 9 will only do 200 if being used very hard. However if moving up to say a dog box version it is a bit
better as one of those will survive in an Escort with a genuine 260hp Vx with huge torque also.
Standard boxes should be good for 200 if treated gently and smooth gear changes are used.

The T9 is rated at 145Ft/Ibs 145 BHP
The desiel T9 155Ft/Lbs 145 bhp
and the V6 box at 155Ft/Lbs 155 bhp
Most people run the box with whatever torque they have and replace when it goes bang, if it goes bang to often then you need a stronger one such as
BGH or Quafe.
As the ratios in the T9 ratios whilst better than the MT75 are still too long if you need to uprate for extra power you can also address the gear
ratio problems.
If you invisage big BHP/Torque then consider the Cosworth T5 box much better ratios and much stronger plus you can get a second hand one for about
half the price of a Quafe gearset
There are other options if you are thinking big power (300+bhp and torque to match)
T5 and Supra gearboxes for example.

I upgraded my box as I had the time with a kit from BGH.
The layshaft needle rollers and the synchros are the weak points. The HD gear kits have a proper roller bearing to replace the laygear needle rollers
and the synchros can be replaced with steel rings.
If you are thinking of doing it yourself you will need a few special tools, but nothing major.

well i know somone thats putting 260bhp to his t9 and its running ok,he also thrashes its,as i say this is only for the summer,then t5 in and big
power if i need it that is

Purely a matter of how long you want it to last - and how much abuse its already had. The T9 in mine had 140-ish lb/ft through it for 85,000 miles
and got a bit rattly at idle, plus 1st/2nd synchros were a little sticky when cold.
Upped to it about the 180 mark for the last 10k and its just getting louder and rattles more - still working (last time I had it on the road). About
to shove 220-230lb/ft through it and don't it expect to last as long as the first oil change..
I'm a tight git, so going to an MT75 rather than a BGH one despite the ratios (but its a turbo lump with a flat torque curve anyway).
