Duratec 2.5i4 on carbs
boris123 - 1/7/09 at 07:24 PM

I am looking to convert a new Duratec 2.5 i4 (got one from a Ford Escape that some Muppet crashed while on a test drive….) to run in a MK Indy R.

Nobody seems to have an aftermarket ECU or performance parts as yet so my initial plan (open to suggestions) is Weber sidedrafts with Megajolt.

How difficult will it be to get the Megajolt configured and what else might the Duratec miss from the ECU that was left behind in the scarp yard, bear in mind I am based in the US and the car will not need to pass any emissions tests to be road legal ?

I have not got hold of the engine yet but from what little I have found to read on it I am hoping that the intake/exhaust manifolds, bell housing bolt patterns etc are the same as the 2.0 and 2.3, can anyone confirm?

Also I have read a bit on this forum about Bike carbs and was wondering if their main appeal over say a pair of Weber DCOE’s is just price or truly performance.

sounds like a question for flak monkey.

I wonder if that is the same engine as the Focus RS/ST and the Volvo?

Isn't the 2.5 in the Focus a 5 pot (Volvo engine )?

The 2.5 5 pot is a volvo engine, not a ford engine, hence the lack of tuning bits.

The best way to tune would be have a look and see what the Focus ST boys use....

Anything is possible with megasquirt and bike throttle bodies, its just a case of how much time you want to spend getting it working

The new Duratec 2.5 is indeed a larger displacement of the 2 and 2.3 and found in the 2010 Fusion (USA) and not a 5 cyl volvo engine. Here's a thread discussing that particular engine

Ahh, ok.

If it is a development of the normal I4 I would think that its going to be using a lot of the same parts head wise as the other I4 engines, so the same manifolds/carbs/throttle bodies should fit.

I should think the overall dimensions will be similar to the 2.3 which is slightly taller (12mm) than the 1.8 and 2.0 in order to get the longer stroke required for the capacity. So if you were looking for forged rods and pistons you would probably wait a while for them to be available.

Yeah from what little I can find out about the 2.5 the external dimensions are similar to the othe Duratec i4s and they seem to be putting them in cars that had the 2.3 in the previous Model year without mentioning any other modifications such as new gearbox etc. Actually Wikipedia has been my best source so far http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Duratec_engine and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_MZR_engine (same engine)
The reason I looked around for one was that along with the larger bore they come with an improved Crankshaft and Cylinder Liners so I was hoping that I could boost the power with carbs and not have to do much inside the engine to make it holdup, unlike a lot of the 2.0 performance kits I have seen where the price mounts up quickly as you basically replace everything….
My biggest fear remains Megajolt, I have no experience of it at all, either from a performance and reliability standpoint or ease of getting it setup and running in the first place. Also my question remains about Bike carbs verses Weber, any Input ???
