Type 9 Speedo drive oil leak
Dave Bailey - 4/7/09 at 07:49 PM

Filled my gearbox a while back and have noticed that there is an oil leak from the speedo drive. How gearbox is on and access is a restricted.... How easy is it to get this out to replace the seal and how is it done?

I will not be using the drive so if iy can be removed and plugged then this would be o.k.

thanks

I would clean it up and use that two part "quicksteel" (the putty type stuff) to seal it up if you do not use it.

I'm sure I read somewhere that there will always be a slight leak from this point - the idea being that a little drip of oil now and again helps to lubricate the speedo cable.

However, this may be a load of old cobblers!

just was gonna post why DJ ^^^^ said.

simple solution is to fit the speedo cable flange bit with speedo cable cut off and sealed = glue or solder in place.

I'll be making some plugs to blank off type 9 speedo cables pretty soon.

All you will need to do is take the circlip out and remove the bit the end of the cable then push in the plug with a bit of hylomar around it to seal it.

David,
Do you fancy making an extra one for some beer tokens?

thanks

I can make you one yes. Give me a couple of weeks to get set up and the new lathe installed and I can make you one.

I assume its just the cable side you need to blank off?
