And no its not a BEC its a van.
I'm guessing its game over, symptoms..
Hard to explain in words but even in neutral it feels like it is trying to drive plus not so nice clunking noises, press clutch noise stops, dont
think its clutch related, difficult to get into 1st or reverse, once on the move seems to drive fine with exception of 1st gear.
Just happened as I pulled off motorway on way home tonight, sounds terminal to me.
Renault traffic, 2 litre petrol. I know the diesel box as a reputation but thought that was 4th/5th gear and noisy on the move ?
Gearbox on these, easy/hard ? Out from underneath I guess ?

got the right/any oil in the gearbox?
To wet to get on floor and check but at last service yes, would it not be a tad noisy on the move or is oil a possibility, Mrs just mentioned gear linkage, if something as gone on that sorta trying to put it in gear whilst your not touching gear stick ? gear stick does feel different with longer throws ?
Sounds like a Thrust bearing

when my vivaro gearbox broke, it was the selectors that went. Very weak linkage, you often get the feeling you need to carefully find gears. If your link has started to go it could well leave syncros engaged which would pass some drive on.
Only two possible causes
(1) Needle roller bearing in the gearbox is partly seized --- usually caused by lack of lubrication.
(2) (much less likely) a bent selector fork or interlock mechanism causing a synchro on one gear to rub.
