The source of my engine noise.
Neil P - 19/7/09 at 01:27 PM

After my SVA the other day my engine developed a seriously nasty noise. I'e had a look inside and found that No 2 big end does this - Crank

When I took the cap off I found that there are no shells left at all and the crank looks like this - Photo

Any opinions on whether that is still serviceable with new bearings, or not, please?

Neil

Not a chance I'm afraid, I don't think you'd find oversize bearings that big!

Nope need a fresh engine

tomgregory2000 - 19/7/09 at 01:33 PM

Ouch
Thats nasty

Hmm looks bad, you need to measure it with a mic and check the size it may clean up wth some wetndry but it really needs to be within about a thou of the original size

new crank, new shells, new rods

jpindy3 - 19/7/09 at 01:34 PM

oh bugger, new engine for you then,is it the 4age,you should be able to find one quite cheap,

As a matter of interest did you find the remains of the shell in the sump?
Where did you get the engine from?

COREdevelopments - 19/7/09 at 01:45 PM

i had the same problem with my 4age. had oil starvation problem due to a chopped sump and low oil! although i managed to save my crank as i cut the engine as soon as i heard the noise. No3 bearing span, so I put a new set of bearing in along with an accucump and all is good so far.

Yes, the sump is full of bits. I got it locally from a bloke breaking an MR2. I heard it running before I bought it. When I had it running in the car it sounded great, no knocks or rattles.

Yep its cream crackered, mother goosed and NFG just like the one below, which ran a bit too long.

Irvined on here had the same rattle from his MX5. Scared the bejezus out of me when i heard it.

Solution was a engine from a breakers.

There are engineering companies who will build up the journal and machine it back to STD diameter but the cost may well be prohibitive. May be cheaper to find a replacement engine and start again. Even if you rebuild you need to find out why it was starved if oil

As nash says there are people who will build up the journal, but you'll need a new crank anyway so you may as well just get a new engine. We sent away an engine at work to get some machining done on the journals (granted an engine much rarer and worth a LOT more than a 4age) and it came back after a month with us a few grand poorer!

Stott - 19/7/09 at 07:46 PM

reminds me of when I done the crank on my mk2 golf 16v, when I drained the sump it looked like copperslip pouring out

on the plus side I bought a whole car for the lump for £150 that turned out to have a GTI Engineering engine in it, and I broke the shell/interior for about a monkey!

Neil P - 20/7/09 at 04:01 PM

Yes, as I thought really. I went and ran a fingernail across the surface, it would just mince any new bearings put in there, I'm afraid.
Oh well, looks like I've a job to do then!
