Ok so my spare engine is going to be the next winter project and I have started to get some parts together.
I have fallen heir to a timing belt kit for a late XE with the square tooth belt and a new water pump.
As i need to sourece 2 new cam pulleys i thought perhaps I could source the square toothed ones. But will they fit the cams I have???
Also this setup has an extra idler/tensioner pulley between the pump and crank pulley which I've not seen before ( only heard about it).
So the questions are
What parts would be needed to change a round toothed belt setup to a square toothed belt setup.
Bottom crank pulley (Yes)
2 off cam pulleys ( yes but will they fit or were the cams different)
Will the back timing cover need to be replaced?
Is the idler setup/mounting points different and if so will the block have the necessary holes be drilled/tapped.
Anything I've missed???
Anyone got parts to help me out??(for beer tokens or swapsies)I might have something you need.

I think you'll be causing yourself no end of trouble trying to change it all over.
Plus the later cambelts ran on plastic idler pulleys, which were always a weak spot.
Anyway, wouldnt it be cheaper just to buy a round tooth cambelt kit?
I've got spare cambelt pulleys (roundtooth) if you want some.
I'll be picking up a calibra next week, which is probably going to have a later xe in it, so i might beable to give further details on placement
of bits then.
Just looked in my stash.. it's got square toothed cam pulleys (still on the cams). The ends look the same to me.
You can have the square or the round ones if you want
I have all the square tooth bottom end bits and some cam pulleys somewhere if you want them, BUT, the round tooth setup is better, BUT the tensioners
are expensive BUT they last almost forever, where the later ones are crap.
The block mounts are the same for all. The backplate is NOT the same and will need changing, then you need water pump, cam pulleys, bottom inner
pulley, idler carrier, idlers, tensioner.
I always use the older round tooth setup, hence having the square tooth bits laying around...............
A belt is only a few quid, that's the cheap bit!!

yea that's what I meant really, the tensioner is the idler, but they are pricey, both the moving one and the fixed one.
