As above i got a new sump gasket for my pinto but in the packaging were this little lot, i am only replacing the sump but wondered if anyone could tell me exactly what the other parts are for, especially the plastic washer with the two squares that are in thier own seperate packet.

Oval ones are

fuel pump and oil pick up pipe.

The litte square ones are part of the sump gasket.

surely someone on here must know!

they are the little wedge bits that go in the corners at the main bearing caps

its in the haynes book (i'll post a pic later if I can find the book)

the round washer is a replacement washer for the drain plug and the 2 grey squares are part of the sump seal where the sump goes around the main bearing cap. Look at the engine and you might see the old ones still in place (you have to push/hammer them into place)

Forgive my ignorance but if memory serves me right they are fitted at the rear of the block and are for sealing the rear main bearing cap to prevent oil leaking from the rear the curved face of the wedger faces the cap (cover with sealing compound first)

if you haven't already started, my top tip is to start out with some longer bolts (4 ish) and use them to locate, rather than fiddling with the short ones from the off, once located, its a lot easier to get the small ones in. Obviously remove the long ones once located and replace with standard... HTH

Just recently done a full engine gasket change after replacing sump for short one and rocker cover for one with rear filler, i did do the mods on an engine stand though, much easier.
The little square plugs, as said are for the flywheel end main cap to block gap but are a pig to get out properly, i will only replace after another engine rebuild, so on this one i cleaned up the little blocks as best i could and used grey gasket sealant then bedded the cork gasket on, left to dry over night then sealant on the sump and press on to gasket.

my haynes says.....

I think the round coppery coloured ones are for the next gasket after you bodge up the job with this one
