Just after some advice - am trying to pick a gear ratio (chain diff) for R4. The R1 engine has a particulary tall 1st gear, so just trying to work out
how to gear it.
Previously it was about 55mph in first and about 130mph top end. (Which it would hit, I was limited by the rev limiter)
I have an upper limit on the rear sprocket of about 50 due to a chassis rail, I could modify it to take a 52 possibly if the gearing really required
it...
Here are a few options:
52T: 69mph 1st 139mph 6th
51T: 71mph 1st 142mph 6th
50T: 72mph 1st 145mph 6th
49T: 74mph 1st 148mph 6th
I'm guessing 52 is about where I want to be?
Hi James,
Now were talking! take it your changing to an R1 soon have a turbo on it
Would say 52 would be about right if its turbod you could probably get away with a 50
mines geared for 132mph in 6th according to speedcalc although the digidash recall normally shows 136mph on the limiter as you know
all on private
roads of course
Edited to say just realised isn't the 5VY the newer engine?

Indeed, it's a 2005 R1, about 172hp - I'm just after some reliable power that doesn't use a litre of oil every trip out!
I might be persuaded to turbo it in the future...
James
Hi James,
I have sent you an e-mail with a gear ratio calculator for the 5VY.
You could possibly drop the front sprocket to a 15 tooth and use the 50 tooth on the rear to get the sort of figures you are looking for?
Doug.
My Fury has a Freelander 3.21:1 diff on an '06 R1 (revs slightly higher at 13750). It's a bit high/long on first gear. Gets to well over 70
in first at the limiter and took some getting used to setting off. It's also difficult to spin the wheels up from stationary as a result.
Then again it gives a high top end (150+) and cruises at just over 6000prm at 70mph.
This is all assuming a 14 tooth front!
I understood the limit on the 05 R1 was 14,500rpm, and my calcs are based on this - is this not the case?
The 1200 gsx-r would be on the limit of traction in 2nd with an enthusiastic start and that topped out about 70, so i'd be aiming for about 65
I'd say in 1st?

Going by pictures of clocks from the 5VY, the red line starts at about 13,500 rpm.

At the end of the vid, definately seems to bounce at 14,500
I'm sure that Yamaha put the red line at 13750 for a reason
