My old man took the Robinhood for a blast this afternoon and phone me to say the car had "stopped" and wouldnt run...

I drove out to him and after some investigation I found what I believe to be the fault...

The standard mechancial fuel pump on the engine pushes fuel into what looks like a cylinder with random bits sticking off it next to the engine..... there is one pipe from this random thing to the carb, and another pipe returning to the tank at the back of the car... The device was from the sierra...

Whenever you turned over the engine the fuel was being pumped into this "device" and then being returned to the tank without reaching the carb...

So I bypassed this "thing" by connecting the pump straight to the carb via a filter to get the car home..


Now my questions..

What is the "thing" in question?

And do I need it?

Can I get away with just connecting the fuel pump straight to the carb without risk of overfilling the carb etc?

It's most likely the vapour collector and fuel return unit. Get rid of it and leave the output of the fuel pump connected directly to the carb inlet.

it is a fuel pressure regulator and/or vapout separator - used to stabilise the fuel pressure to the carb.

regulator provides contant fuel pressure to the carbs hence maintains a constant float level in the carbs which reduces exhaust emissions.

vapor separator purges vapour from the carb fuel supply thus improving hot starting qualities.

^^^ dito, it's there for a reason (not to say you can't get away without one..).. I also think there is a fuel filter in mine (came from a 1.8 CVH sierra)...

Chuck it, I came across one in the garage the other day and looked at it wondering what the hell it did.

It may help save the fuel pump in a zero maintenance 200K tintop but not in our less used well looked after, recovery backed specials
