Iv just been out doing various check before running the engine with a cooling system tomorrow adn all is well except the water pump is leaking.

It is dripping at a rate of 1 drip every 2ish seconds from the radiator inlet.

Looking a bit closer, i can see it being one of two problems.

1) The reduser hose i cut down could be too short although the jubilee clip covers the whole hose with a bit left on either side.

2) The ridge on the rad inlet on the water pump has a little (2cm) piece missing. I wouldnt have thought this would be a problem with the jubilee clip on though.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how to stop the leak without spending money on a new water pump?

might be because the hose can't 'shrink' to clamp round the pump, but needs to deform, meaning there might still be a small gap round it, no matter how much you try to tighten it. the bit missing out the pump won't help either.

if you just want a test run tomorrow, that drip won't hurt.

perhaps consider a hose reducer to get down to the right size?

Make sure the alloy pump inlet is clean and free of corrosion. If it's badly pitted from corrosion you can make a pretty good repair to this kind of damage with epoxy (e.g. JB Weld).

For a quick solution a spot of gasket sealer around the inlet before you refit the hose will likely stop the leaks, but this is a bodge.

I'm assuming the hose is a reasonably tight push fit onto the water pump?

Yeah ok. Should i be wirried though that the drip is right next to the alternator?

Hi, you could always add an aditive to the cooling system to stop the leak, K-seal is very good. or rad seal. good luck.

Cheers guys. I just went out and made a new ridge with the stuff i used to seal the fuel tank the other week, waited for it to dry and then put some liquid gasket on.

Seems to have stopped the leak but il wait until tomorrow before i carry on with more water.

Bung an egg in the coolant.

Or fix it properly I agree building up the ridge with JB weld would be the best option for the 2nd problem. Can't see an alternative on the 1st but to get some longer hose.

Turns out its still leaking

I put the reducer from the top hose on ot to see if it was the hose but its not.

I have now used the stuff i used to fix the tank right round the rose and clamped it on so whe it dries, hopefully, it will seal it and also put liquid gasket all round the inside of the hose.
