Pinto Power... Took the Quantum to the Dyno Today!
scootz - 13/10/09 at 12:53 PM

Standard 205 block with Piper 285 cam and downdraft carb... 105bhp and 140ft/lbs!

An absolute hoot on the twisties as it never runs away from you, but still can't wait for the Audi V8 engine build to complete!

Nice one,was that at the fly wheel or the wheels? like the garage too.
What you putting the Audi engine in?

Into the Quantum... I fancy something a bit banzai.

nick205 - 13/10/09 at 01:18 PM

RR figures always to be treated with a little salt, but 105bhp seems a little low with a 285 cam, even on a standard DGV/DGAV carb. Mine made more than that on 2 different RRs with a bog standard Ford cam in place.

Did you get a feel for the power and torque curves and fuelling levels?

Although if you're putting that mahooosive great Audi motor in there then the Pinto is probably not high on the agenda for mods etc.

It'll do for winter-weekend blatting!

Mind you - I can't stress enough just how much fun the car is with that engine... sure, I'm not going to win any drag races, but I'm in control of it at all times and that makes you feel like the proverbial Driving God! So easy to go sideways and pull it back in line!

I'm was swithering with whether or not to put the Blackbird engine that I have advertised for sale in it as it's surely owe me much more than I'll ever get for it, but my previous experience with a BEC was not entirely a happy one! Great fun when you're in banzai mode, but a complete and utter PITA when you just want to go for a leisurely blat!

I've not put any time whatsoever into setting the engine up right... it's just as it came (and had been sat for a couple of years before coming to me).

I could be tempted to fit a couple of 45's and an ignition unit as they are as good as money in the bank... run them for winter and sell when the RS4 lump is ready to go in. That should perk things up a bit! 115-120rwbhp???

Oh, and the Missus hates BEC's because;

a) She can't drive them.
b) They make her ears bleed.
c) You have to drive like a tw@t in them at all times!

ashg - 13/10/09 at 03:39 PM

i cant see a problem there

Nice one
Theres a lot to be said for not having too much power - now mine is sorted , it's kinda hard to drive fast , easily spinning in second on a dry road , and trying to chuck itself into any available ditch at the slightest provocation..........a winter `downgrade' is on the cards

which dyno did you take it too ?

Hypertech at Bonnybridge... seen to know what they're doing.

What bike carbs are best suited to the 2 litre pinto? R1's?

Xtreme Kermit - 13/10/09 at 08:44 PM

Xtreme's seems to be really planted cars, mine is on yoko 539s and with 160ish bhp it is unflappable on the road during the summer.

Just been out in the dark this evening, and with the cold things are starting to get a little more interesting...

How does the xtreme feel compared to the MK?

scootz - 13/10/09 at 09:24 PM

Definately more chuckable than the Indy. In fact, I would say that the real-world handling is up there with my old S3 Caterham!

My blat today has me wondering if 400bhp is too much... could well spoil a damn good car. Oh, I dunno!

Got to say that I'm really pleased with the component quality (especially all the bespoke bits!) and the company seems really helpful. Comfy too!

R1's or ZX9R are both really common (mine are late ZX9R's) roughly equivelent to twin 45's
the choke size or the power of the bike they come from is a good guide

there are loads of other threads about bike carbs on pinto's (its actually why I signed up here in the first place )
