Exhaust discolouration
speedyxjs - 22/10/09 at 08:33 PM

Just wanted to check to make sure this is normal.

After my first long engine run, the exhaust has the normal blueish tint, as they normally do. The thing i am a bit concerned about is the fact that it is discoloured right up to the silencer.

Is this ok as i have never seen this much exhaust 'blued'?

would suggest a lot of heat, have you noted any overheating problems ?? is it running ok ?? if both the previous are ok I wouldnt worry

It had an air leak but not sure if that would increase the temperature. A small section was covered in exhaust wrap to protect the brake reservoir and it was idling at, i would guess, around 3-4000 rpm as it wouldn't idle (hopefully caused by the air leak).

It will get much hotter if it's running lean due to the air leak.

Be careful you can destroy an engine if it's very lean.

Well that would probably explain it then

The air leak should be sorted now but i need to put some more oil in before i can test it and i cant afford the oil atm

What oil are you after speedy?

10w 40

You have to run very lean (AFR 17+), and normally under load to really do damage don't you? If your zorst is new, then I wouldn't worry - I think it looks much better than shiny stainless!

If you run a cars engine with it parked up then the exhaust will get very hot as nothing blowing around to cool it off.

So 5 minutes @ 4000rpm, no load would start to make the thing red hot along its entire length

when my engine was running very lean it was glowing after a minute or so of running, but when i was at the sva they were running it for about 20 mins and it was fine, no redness at all
