hi,
Just a quick one asking your opinions, I am about to order a gasket set for me Duratec in atticipation of my block coming back all ready to fit.
Should i go for a genuine gasket set or pattern one??
Main consern for me is the valve stem seals, geniune cost £40 on there own or spend £40 on a full gasket set off ebay.
Thanks in advance
goaty
Ive never had a problem with ebay gasket sets (other than missing parts) but then, ive only ever dealt with relatively cheap engines......
I bought a full set for £40 off ebay. Not run it yet, but time will tell. Bought it mainly for all the odd little seals which I'll need during
the rebuild.
Genuine head gaskets are about £35 too.
Figure I'll take the chance and if it goes replace it with a cossie one.
Go for a good quality OE manufacturer like Payen if you want to avoid dealer prices.
Watch out as there are lots of "fake" gasket sets coming in from the far east...and the easiest place to shift them is e-bay.

I always consider not only the price but also the hassle if a part needs replacing. Saving £40 or so compared to the grief of changing it all
later, and still having to buy the "right" part.
And the risk of damage should it all go pear shaped.................usually at a VERY bad time
I bought a set of ebay, the metal shim head gasget is holding well, the only real problem I had was that the sump gasket was made of cork and just
disintergrated and leaked oil.
The rest were perfect, so the best bet is to buy a set and look at each gasket individually and decide if it is suitable.
At the end of the day a gasket is just a piece of rubber, cork, paper, metal etc cut in a shape.

i think it has a rubber sump one, the head gasket wont be used as i have a MLS comtec one. Main qorry was valve stem seals as i have never used some
from these sets before, head will be coming off after first summer for freshen up so will prob give them a go.
And as flak said, the little odds you get will definetly come in handy.
cheers guys
Goaty what sort of prepping have you done for the cometic?
The duratec doesnt have a sump gasket, just sealed with RTV
